    "ocrText": "Lucy Minnigerode\nAs I sat waiting for her memorial service to\nbegin, looking at a staircase cascaded with flowers,\nI thought of the qualities of personality that\nwould last in the hearts of all who knew her-\nvivid, steadfast, loyal, impulsive, keen, devoted,\nfriendly-and to what lengths of purpose these\ncharacteristics had served!\nWe will probably always think of her more in\nterms of personality than the causes which she\nserved. Born in a generation devoted to \"causes,\"\nshe stood for personality and particularly the ex-\npression of personality through the field of nurs-\ning. With an incisive mind, sympathies always\nalert, she was interested in the establishment of\nchannels through which nurses might better serve\nthe sick. She went into nursing when it was not\na socially accepted work in the world. She lived\nto see it a profession honored in every community\nin the land.\nLUCY MINNIGERODE\nShe loved youth, she gave of her experience\nabundantly. She loved people, not things, and she lived generously. We will miss her but her spirit is\nnot lost. It has gone into her nursing service, not only in the Government Services but into the whole\nprofession. She loved it and lived for it.\nShe died as she had lived, in the enjoyment of living-after a morning in the office and an afternoon in\nher garden making ready for another summer at her much-loved country home where she could have her\nfriends, old and young, come to see her.\nShe lies in her beloved Virginia, in a lovely, wooded, upland country. Cummings, Doctor\nof the United States Health Service, died Sunday\nS. L. Christian, Doctor E. F. Ernst, Doctor Wal-\nmorning, March 24, at Vauxcleuse, Seminary Hill,\nter Treadway, Doctor Estella F. Warner; the\nAlexandria, Virginia-the residence of her niece,\nheads of the nursing services of the Government\nMrs. Andrews.\nand the American Red ross-Major Julia C.\nShe was in her office as usual Saturday morn-\nStimson, Superintendent Army Nurse Corps;\ning, then lunched with friends and drove out to\nMiss Myn Hoffman, Superintendent Navy Nurse\nher country home in the early afternoon. While\nCorps ; Miss Clare Gaffney, Assistant Superin-\nworking in her garden she suffered a stroke of\ntendent of Nurses, Public Health Service: Mrs.\napoplexy and was carried to the residence of Mrs.\nMary A. Hickey, Superintendent of Nurses, Vet-\nAndrews.\nerans' Administration; Miss Elinor D. Gregg,\nServices were held at Vauxcleuse Monday aft-\nSupervisor of Nurses, Indian Bureau, and Miss\nernoon and the interment was in the family plot\nClara D. Noyes, Director, Nursing Service, Amer-\nat Middleburg, Virginia.
