BICKNELL, VICE-CHAIRMAN\nCIVIC AUDITORIUM\nSAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA\nROLL CALL RED CROSS NURSES DEFENSE TEST\nAugust 4, 1924.\nDear Red Cross Nurse:\nOn the 12th of September, 1924, on behalf of the War Department the\nSurgeon General of the United States Army, has asked the Red Cross to call\nthe Roll of our Red Cross Nurses, as part of the Defense Test of all organi-\nzed military groups, as well as the citizens of this country. This is the\nfirst practical test of the peace time working of the National Defense Act.\nIt does not mean active service, it does not mean giving up your work, but\nit does mean that you are expected to report to the Committees under which\nyou are enrolled, or to such other headquarters as may later be designated,\neither in person, by letter, telephone or telegram. No nurse need be put\nto any expense, beyond a two-cent stamp or a telephone call, or if she has\nbeen particularly tardy, she may need to pay for a telegram.\nRegardless of age, occupation, or present physical condition, you\nare expected to answer the Roll Call on that day exactly as if you were\ncalled into active service. Each nurse enrolled in our service appreciates\nthat its primary purpose is a reserve to the Army and Navy Nurse Corps,\nand therefore should be prepared to answer a call of this sort whenever it\nmay come.
