ROLL CALL RED CROSS NURSES DEFENSE TEST
August 4, 1924.
Dear Red Cross Nurse:
On the 12th of September, 1924, on behalf of the War Department the
Surgeon General of the United States Army, has asked the Red Cross to call
the Roll of our Red Cross Nurses, as part of the Defense Test of all organi-
zed military groups, as well as the citizens of this country. This is the
first practical test of the peace time working of the National Defense Act.
It does not mean active service, it does not mean giving up your work, but
it does mean that you are expected to report to the Committees under which
you are enrolled, or to such other headquarters as may later be designated,
either in person, by letter, telephone or telegram. No nurse need be put
to any expense, beyond a two-cent stamp or a telephone call, or if she has
been particularly tardy, she may need to pay for a telegram.
Regardless of age, occupation, or present physical condition, you
are expected to answer the Roll Call on that day exactly as if you were
called into active service. Each nurse enrolled in our service appreciates
that its primary purpose is a reserve to the Army and Navy Nurse Corps,
and therefore should be prepared to answer a call of this sort whenever it
may come. It does not mean war, but it does mean preparedness and effici-
ency, If our enrollment stands for this, do not let your failure to answer
the Roll Call not later than the morning of the 12th of September, prefer-
ably a few days before, bring criticism upon the whole service, as not
measuring up to the purpose for which it is organized.
Please pass this word on to your sister nurses, watch the public
press, the nursing journals and the Red Cross Courier for general informa-
tion, and whatever you do keep constantly before you in some conspicuous
place the words Report September 12th. "HERE"!!
Very truly yours,
Tel Park 8600.
