THE AMERICAN RED CROSS
NEW ENGLAND DIVISION HEADQUARTERS
ARTHUR G. ROTCH
CHENEY C. JONES
DIVISION MANAGER
73 NEWBURY STREET
PAUL W. KIMBALL
ASSISTANT DIVISION MANAGERS
BOSTON 17. MASS.
December 29, 1921.
Miss Clara D. Noyes, Director,
Nursing Service,
American Red Cross,
Washington, D. 0.
PERSONAL AND CONFIDENTIAL.
My dear Miss Noyes:-
I cannot quite get your point in feeling that Miss Nelson
should have something done for her that probably could not be done in the case
of some other person, perhaps even a stenographer. It seems to me that the
kind of case that should be made an exception of is that of a person who is ab-
solutely in need of funds. Possibly I am not informed about Miss Nelson and she
may be absolutely destitute and in need of funds, in which case I should be very
glad to make an exception. What is the good of a rule if it is continually
broken? I should be very glad to hear from you again about this and also glad
to have you take it up with Mr. Persons. I want Miss Nelson to have everything
that we possibly can give her but I have felt that National Headquarters has made
a ruling in regard to the amount of sick leave that could be extended with pay.
I have supposed in the most needy cases there could be some exception. Please
tell me if I am wrong.
It was with very great pleasure that I read your statement
to Judge Payne. in regard to the continuation of the Division idea. It was cer-
tainly a most able exposition of the case. Both you and Miss Fox hit the nail
on the head in every point. of course there is not much use for me to say any-
thing about it because in the minds of those people who are in favor of the
State plan idea they will simply say that I am trying to hold a job. I think
you know that this is not the case with me because it would not make very much
difference whether I got out of the Red Cross tomorrow, but I certainly would not
think of getting out because I want to fight this thing through for our people
here, along with you, Mr. Persons, Miss Fox, and a few others.
We were much pleased to get your Christmas card. Helen is
in New York with Josephine.
Very sincerely yours,
AGR.K
Division Manager.
