successor and that she, too, urgently advised calling on the National
Committee. Miss Boardman called me to her office this morning and talked
with me, giving me the same impression that she had given Admiral Grayson.
If he advises I will, as Secretary of the Committee, send out a "feeler"
to the members which will give them the opportunity, if they so desire,
to write directly to the Admiral on the subject of the importance of a
careful selection for the positio of National Director of the Red Cross
Nursing Service.
There is much in the interview with Admiral Grayson
that I cannot tell you about in a letter but I assure you that I tried
to leave him with a very fair picture of the situation as it was just
previous to Miss Noyes' death and I explained to him frankly the great
apprehension and worry she, herself, had regarding the person who would
succeed her. At least we may hope for good results.
I am so grateful to you for your kindness and expressions
of
affection. As you must have known for many years, I have looked up to
you almost with awe and certainly with a great deal of admiration.
Most sincerely yours,
Ida F. Butler
Acting Director of Nursing
