Niss Ohristine M. Nuno,
St. Luke's Hospital,
Tokyo, Japan.
My dear Miss Nunoi
Thanks very much for your New Years' letter and
your good wishes for the coming year. I, too, hope it will be a
good one for all oflus, at least Estfar as heslth is concerned,
for without that we are not of much use either to ourselves or to
anyone else.
May I offer you congratulations upon having
received life membership in the Japanese Red Cross, it is indeed
a great honor. I am sure you deserved it, and I can imagine the
formalities which attended the ce emony.
By the way, a few days ago I received a bundle
from Miss Bagiwara containing a piece of Japenese material, cotton
and rather pretty. I wonder what they use it for? It probably
would make very pretty draperies, or at least side-drapes for a
window. I wish she would stop sending me things. While I
appreciate her remembering the there is such a person as 1, at
the semetime it suggests to my practical and direct mind something
like graft, and of course such methoda are most repugnant to
straightforward American women.
In regard to the Japanese National Association
of Nurses, I too have begun to wonder just whether it was arriving,
and by the way I will bo very glad to send copies of letters to
you which Wiss Reimann writes to Niss "agiwara, as she always sends
me copies of her communications, especially where membership is
concerned. When I can get about it I will look back through the
correspondence end see whether I can find any recent letters which
she has written to the lady in que tion. Evidently the fact of
paying dues on the part of individualemembers to an Association is
w
not a popular idea in Japan, and that makes me wonder whether she
thinks that I am paid by the International Counci of Nurses to be
its First Vice-President. If she thinks I am paid, I am wondering
S
what she thinks Miss Reimann receives. As a matter of fact, Miss
Reimann is practicelly a voluntear, receivinglonly the small sum of
