Z Miss Nuno. - 2 - the $1500 from the I.C.N., which she uses entirely for travelling expenses. I em sending with this a check for ten dollars, which I vant you to apply for the string of pearls. If this reaches you before Miss Reid leaves, you can send them by her. Do not hesitate, however, to add any additional sume within reason, to this amount if M you can get me a better string. I do not think I shall ever be happy until 1 possess a string of real pearls. e Sp aking of pearls, reminds me of Mrs. St.John, not that 1 ever saw her with a S ring about her neck, but because of her relation to Miss Reid. I had a very nice note from her acknowledg- ing my Christmas letter. the also sent me a very attractive Christnas card. I an sure you are finding plenty of work to do in initiating and establishing your public health nursing program on a sound found tion. Will you also thank Araki San for the very pretty little calendar wich she sent to me? How I wish that 1 could visit Japan, but it does not look very hopeful. I am planning now to sail for Europe on June 13, in order to be present at the dedication of the American Nurses Memorial, and also to attend the board Heeting of the International Council of Nurses which occurs on June 29, at which tine I suppose we will consider the status of the National Associatins that are applying for membership. My sister and niece are quite well, and so too is Scurry, who you will recall as being "beautiful but dumb.' He is not so dumb as you think. whe he hears my automobile drive up in front of the house he has sense enough to run to the chair in front of the windos and put is paws on the back of the chair and watch me get out of it. If he happens to be on the sidewalk when I come in, although many other cars park on the same street, he knows mind well enough to jomp on the running board. I expect to keill him some day without knowing it. if you call that dumb, then I don't think much of your judgment of cats. We are tremendously busy at National deadquarters trying to raise the ten million dollars for the drought relief, and trying to head off Congress from giving us five million. The Red Cross has refused to accept the Government's subsidy, even if they appropriate it. Now I understand the American wegion is bidding for it, and probably the Salvation Army. While you were sitting watching the snow coming down, we have had day after day of perfectly beautiful sunshiny wer ther, and not a flake of snow through the whole month of January. With best wisnes, I am as always `incerely yours, J National Director, Nursing Service. 2 n. 2
