Miss Christine M. Nuno,
American Red Cross,
c/o American Consul General,
3
Athens, Greece.
e
My dear Miss Nuno:
C.
I was very glad to get your post card yosterday and em sorry to hear that you
e
are having some trouble with your hand. I should juige from your card to me that
a
that was not the only trouble you were hnving. It certainly has baen a tarrific
experience. Vie have been intensely interested in all the letters that have come
to us - one of the most recent from Mies Carr almost made us weap. I'wonder how
one keeps their wits and lonowa how to RO about relieving a situation for such huge
numbers. It is guch a terrible thing to see suffering and not be able (O relieve
it.
I are more and more impressed with Mrs. Heilman - she must be a very remarkable
woman and also I should say a very lovable one. She has certainly accomplished a
piece of work that I think has hardly bean equaled by enyone in the Red Cross.
It
seems to me she has hnd to work so much ageinst odds.
Thore is not a groat deal to tell you of National Headquarters news that you
will not already have heard from Mims Johnson. I feel so deeply in sympathy with
her over the loss of hor mother, and know that she misses you. Of course the closing
of Bayshore is another blow, but as blows soem to como thick and fast these days we
are learning here at Headquarters to thke these things with a certain kind of
philosophy which grows out of a situation which one cannot holp.
Miss Holmes lanvos the Red Cross the first of April and Miss Helen Teal takes
har place as Assistant to Fox. Miss Holmon and Niss Van Duzor, as you will
probably remember, ara soing to. run a farm.
The Chairman has just returned from a trip taken with the Prosident, or rether
he
was one of the Presidential party. He succumbed, however, early in the game to
some elight illness and went ahoore nt one of the Florida resorts to recoperate and
is now back at National ters.
I had a very exciting scrap with your friend, Mr. Mulhall, yesterday, ell being
on account of a disabled nurse for whom I am struggling to get insurance. He
certainly does not take a very interested attitude, and roes after all these cases
and looks for additional evidence with his legal microscope until I em almost crazy
trying to get information that will establish the nurse's claim. It was all so
different when Mr. Wilson was here.
