VICE CHAIRMAN\nREAR ADMIRAL E,R R, STITT\nWASt ELIOT WADSWORTH\nROLL CALL RED CROSS NURSES DEFENSE\ny\nnew bork.\nDear Red Cross Nurse\nOn the 12th of September, 1924, on behalf of the War Department\nthe Surgeon General of thé United States Army has asked the Red Cross to call\nthe Roll of our Red Cross Nurses, as part of the Defense Test of all organized\nmilitary groups, as well as the citizens of this country. This is the first\npractical test of the peacetime working of the National Defense Act. It does\nnot mean active service, it does not mean giving up your work, but it does mean\nthat you are expected to report to the Committees under which you are enrolled,\nor to such other headquarters as may later be designated, either in person, by\nletter, telephone or telegram. No nurse need be put to any expense, beyond a\ntwo-cent stamp or telephone call, or if she has been particularly tardy, she\nmay need to pay for a telegram.\nRegardless of age, occupation, or present physical condition, you\nare expected to answer the Roll Call on that day exactly as if you were called\ninto active service. Each nurse enrolled in our service appreciates that its\nprimary purpose is a reserve to the Army and Navy Nurse Corps, and therefore\nshould be prepared to answer a call of this sort whenever it may come. It does\nnot mean war, but it does mean preparedness and efficiency.
