The first nurses say when they were under the Red Cross, they re-
ceived insurance and felt secure, but they are not satisfied under
the O.C.D., and feel that they are not even sure of transportation
home, should the war end. In fact I was under the impression that
my fare was paid to and from my home, but I understand that it is
only paid back as far as San Francisco. This does not seem just,
since that would take $150 away from my salary and instead of
drawing my present salary, I consider it $150 less.
The group feels that they have shown that they are capable of doing
big things and good work - when there is an objective; but without
an objective, they have no desire to continue. They would like to
be sent somewhere in a unit - where they would be able to do some-
thing worthwhile. Most of them have been here since the beginning
and while they have had the thrill of getting it organized, there
is nothing for them at this time.
I have tried and will continue trying to do all I can to make them
feel satisfied, but I know many resignations will be forthcoming
and I wanted you to know the reason for it. In the last three
weeks I have done several things, which seem to please the group:
1: Individual conference with each nurse, to find out how she
is progressing and to give them a chance to express them-
selves. These will continue every month and in between if
necessary.
2: Luncheon staff meetings with the head nurses, Miss Clarke,
Dr. de Harne and I - held monthly. Our first one July 23rd
at which time charting and doctors orders were simplified.
Dr. de Harne knows about this situation and will try to give
our nurses a "pep" talk at the next meeting.
3: I have had a complete physical check-up on each nurse and will
have a monthly weight, urinalysis and red blood cell count
and hemoglobin.
4: Divided the group in threes and each group responsible for a
party. In this way it will stimulate the group by competition.
To-night we have our first one - "ship-wreck party" and from
all indications a good time will be had.
5: I am to lead a group in community singing on Thursday nights-
at the Methodist Church School room - where everybody will be
invited., - U.S.O., hospital personnel and church folks. This
will continue every Thursday night and will help a little.
6: I am working with the visiting nurse and she is taking one of
the nurses with her every week , when she makes her home vis-
its. The first one went out this morning and enjoyed the ex-
perience.
These are just a few of the things I am trying to do, but just what
good it will do, I do not know. I should like to have an opinion
from you - you undoubtedly know about this problem. Have you any
solution in mind? This is not in the form of criticism, but a de-
sire to help solve this problem and have a happy contented group,
who will once again work with a fervor and feel they are accomplish-
ing something worthwhile in their profession.
Sincerely yours,
Stefanie Schlesinger, R.N.
