Miss Ida F. Butler,
Asst. to Director, Nursing Service,
The Ameri can Red Cross,
Washington, D.C.
My dear Miss Butler:-
In reply to your letter concerning Miss Gertrude Smith, I would say that she
was a valuable member of our nursing service in Italy. Miss Smith was stationed at Rim-
ini in the Rimini Refugee Hospital during the winter of 1918, working under very try-
ing circumstances. There was no heat in the Hospital and all the nurses on duty there
had severe colds. Miss Smith was ill wi th influenza, was treated by the Italian Doc-
tor (I cannot recall his name) who was in charge of the Hospital. She was not considered
seriously ill. miss Smith never seemed to be very strong, was a very energetic worker
and very nervous. On account of her health she came to Milan for convalescent care.
She continued On duty until her term of service expired in the early spring of 1919.
I have seen Miss Smith since her return. She always complained of not being
well and feeling ill effects of her attack of influenza. I feel that she is worthy of
assistance.
I am very sorry that there are no reports concerning our Nursing Service in
Italy. I cannot understand this as I myself mailed to Headquarters a list of the
nurses and their duties while in Italy I also sent some reports by Miss de Long when
she returned to the States.
We had no cases Of serious illness in our service, mild attacks of influenza
or digestive disturbances which seemeldof minor importance.
Sincerely yours,

In explanation of the above, may I state that Miss Noyes gave me the name of Miss
Sara Shaw às Miss Shaw was Chief Nurse at Rimini. Miss Noyes felt sure she might
give us information which might be valuable in the consideration of Miss Gertrude
Smith's case.
