October 24, 1942 Mrs. Gerald DeJonge Box 134 Hudsonville, Michigan My dear Mrs. DeJonge: The enclosed check for forty-five dollars and seventy- five cents ($45.75) is the final allotment check which the American Red Cross will issue to Miss Laurine A. Smith and represents the $22.50 allotment for the period July 1-15 and $23.25 for 15 days accrued annual leave. Since July 15 Laurine Smith and the remainder of the nurses who were trans- ferred to the Army Nurse Corps on that date, are no longer Red Cross employees but are now under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Army and subsequent salary checks will be issued by the U.S. Government. Whatever arrangements are being made by the Government for sending portións of salary checks to relatives on the mainland will have to be learned through the nurses them- selves. We regret that there has been so great a delay in getting this settlement check to you. Sincerely yours, Virginia M. Dunbar Assistant Director Nursing Service D b Enc. - Check #93603
