Mus marley Emory University 50 Armstrong Street School of Medicine Department of Medicine Atlanta, Ga. September 9,1942 ROOM MALL No.3 11 1942 SEP Miss Virginia M. Dunbar American Red Cross Headquarters Washington, D. C. Dear Miss Dunbar: I have received your letter about Miss Smith. I am sorry that I cannot make a definite statement as to the origin of her eye trouble. It was first drawn to my attention after she had come to Salisbury, which was several months after the torpedoing of her ship. At that time she had a small corneal ulcer, and, as my letter to Miss Madley indicated, I arranged for her to be seen by Mr. Conroy Dixon in Salisbury. Miss Smith told me that at the time of the torpedoing a small splinter struck her eye and that her trouble had resulted from that accident. I note thattyou have a statement from Miss Sullivan indicating that the trouble began at that time. I am sorry that I cannot be of more help to you. Sincerely yours, Paul B Burn Paul B. Beeson, M. D.
