AMERICAN RED CROSS-HARVARD HOSPITAL HARVARD PUBLIC HEALTH UNIT AMERICAN RED CROSS-HARVARD FIELD HOSPITAL UNIT SALISBURY, ENGLAND JOHN E. GORDON, M.D., DIRECTOR 26 March 1942 Dear Miss Madley: Enclosed is a letter about Miss Smith's eye condition from Mr. Stewart D. Elder who saw her in London on March 22. For convenience I am also enclosing a typed copy of the letter as his handwriting is difficult. As you know she has just finished a course of treatment under Mr. Conroy Dickson, a very good ophthalmic surgeon here in Salisbury. Mr. Dickson has spoken to me about her over the telephone several times. He has seen her on a number of occasions since last fall and has advised various measures for protection of the eye and for relief, all of which have been carried out. About three weeks ago she had an exacerbation and it was found that the injured area of the cornea had become denuded of its epithelium and was the seat of a secondary infection. Mr. Dickson was forced to cauterize this area with phenol. Following the cauterization there has been very satisfactory healing although she now has quite a sizable area of scar which is unfortunately close to the center of her left cornea. We are continuing to follow the advice of Mr. Dickson and incidentally of Mr. Elder. They appear to be in complete agreement in regard to the proper treatment of this condition. Sincerely yours, Paul B. Beeson, M.D. Chief Physician
