April 22, 1942 President, Alumne Association Butterworth Hospital School of Nursing Grand Rapids, Mishigon Dear President: The Alwane Association of the Butterworth Hospital School of Nursing will, I think, be particularly interested in the subject of this letter. As of course you all know, Frances A. Bacon, Laurine A. Smith, from your School, volunteered to serve with the American Red Cross-Harvard Hospital for communicable diseases in England. You have probably followed the interesting experiences the nurous in tist group are having in Salisbury now. Perhaps you do not anow hou valuable their work is. The British Ministry of Health hus been most compligentary in regird to it. As on example of its value, if a single case of typhus fever should appear in England, it is this Unit which would be sent by the Ministry of Health to take assures which there is every reason to believe would control the terrible monace to the people of Ingland. lie are all very proud of the work of this group of Red Cro a nurses. To hear of it from anny different groups of people and almays with great respect and administion for the nurses. It has been decided both by Harvard University and by the Red Cross that the work of the Unit should continue and it is hoped many of the present group will decide to remain with it. There could be no more important war work anywhere than this. You will remember the tragedy of the torpedoing and shipsreck of the S.S. Maasden and S.S. Vigrid lest June, and you will remember too, I think, that five of these nurses and their housenother, Mrs. Ruth Breck- inridge, lost their lives then, their lifebost went to pioces after Maaaden was torpedood. Friends of Mrs. Breckinridge have wented to give a memorial to her end have felt that the kind of memorial she would have liked best would be a sur of money to be placed with the American Red Cross which would con- stitute a loan fund for the returned nurses of the Red Cross-Harvard Unit. No one is being acked to give any money to this memoriel, but friends of the Unit are being told about it so that if they wish to have a part in building up this fund, the opportunity will be given to them to do so.
