Miss Laurine Alva Smith,
Butterworth Hospital,
Grand Rapids, Michigan
My dear Miss Smith:
Your appointment with the Harvard Unit has been approved
pending satisfactory physical examination by your physician -
this examination to include: Typhoid immunization, chest x-ray,
eyes, teeth and statement regarding glasses. A final physical
examination will be arranged for later with & physician representing
the Harvard Unit.
The uniforms worn. will be white for in-door duty and a three
piece navy serge suite with matching Knox felt hat for all street
wear. All uniforms will be furnished so we will be writing re-
garding your measurements. There will be later instructions about
the personal clothing you will take. I am sure you will approve
of the street uniform as it is very neat and attractive.
The sailing date is set tentatively for January 15, 1941.
I am indeed pleased that you are going to have this splenóid
opportunity. It is an experience that is seldom available and
you will be very valuable in any nursing Field when you return to
this country.
Miss Gertrude Madley will be in hashington after December 2.
In the meantime, if you are in Detroit, contact her at the Hospital.
Sincerely yours,
Patience L. Clarke,
Chief Nurse,
American Red Cross-
Harvard Hospital Unit.
