Miss Helen Teal
Kendallville
Indiana
My dear Miss Teal
The manuscript of the manuml has returned together with your
comments. As I have just returned from a week's absence, I have
not had time to do more than glance over your letter hastily. I know
I shall appreciate the suggestions you have given.
You say that you are ready now for another appointment. Before
discussing anything in the immediate future, I should like to find
out what you would think of coming back to Washington in the spring
to take Miss Holmes' place as my assistant? Miss Holmes and Miss Van
Duzor are planning to retire from nursing in favor of farming the
first of March, as you probably know, which means that t I must be look-
ing for someone to take Miss Holmes' place.
While this particular piece of work is not strictly educational,
it has opportunities in that respect which may appeal to you in that
Mi SS Holmes does nearly all of the writing which is required. She
prepares the section for the Public Health Nurse end for other maga-
zines, looks after the Courier material, prepares reports, and reads
and digests the thousand and one magazines, pamphlets and leaflets which
pour into the office. She also has charge of the scholarship and loan
fund representing me on the committee and looks after administrative
details having to do with supplies such as our nursing bags, uniforms,
records, pamphlets, etc. She also takes cere of much of the cor respond-
ance. When I em absent, she takes my place at committee meetings.
I feel that there are more possibilities of leadership in the
national office than we have been able to follow up. I know there is
much we might do of an educational nature if We had time. There is lit-
tle of routine character about the work and I think you would find it
interesting.
I am anxious to fill the position with someone from our own service
who knows the work from the point of view of chapter, state and division
and who at the same time is able to write. You have had just the right
combination of experience and I know enough about your ability in re-
gard to writing and speaking to be sure you could help me much in those
respects.
