Miss Helen Teel,
Seattle Visiting Nurse Association,
c/o American Red Cross,
Seattle, Washington
April 3,1929
My dear Miss Teal:
I have just learned-from Mr. Swift that Miss Caneron wants to come
back to the States at the end of her two year period in st.Croix, that is this
coming June. Mr. Swift hns asked Miss Noyes and me to secure someone to take
her place and it has just occurred to me that perhaps you would like a term of
duty in one of these outlying posts of ours. You will remember that you wrote
me you might not stay on in Seattle after the first few months and Miss Peter-
sen tells me that you spoke of attending the meeting in Montreal in July which
makes me think that you may be planning to return East later in the spring.
It is not necessary, of course, for me to tell you about our work
in St.Croix as you will remember all about it. Miss Cameron has done very well
with it and has made herself solid with the various officers in the Navy. Cov-
ernment, etc. by taking an active part in the social life of the white colony.
Sociability is almost as important a responsibility in the Islands as is pro-
fessional competency.
As you will. recall the salary is $2400, with transportation down
and back and the usual vacation. Should you care to stay longer than two years,
the Red Cross would bring you home at the end of your two years for a month's
vacation and send you back to the Islands at our expense.
Mr. Swift tells me that the Quinn sisters are opening a little
boarding house which would provide a very pleasant place to live. Miss Gillette
I am sure would be delighted to have you as her partner and I believe you
would find it really very interesting. Miss Trunn tells me that even now there
are times when she gets homesick for the Virgin Islands and she says there is
a distinct appeal which is hard to forget.
of course you will want to think this over a bit but I would like
to hear from you soon as you know how much time it takes to get the right person
for the Islands. If you are not interested we will have to get busy and look
around for someone else.
