My dear Mr. and Mrs. Tifft:
I do so wish that I could see you while my visit with Lillian, is
still very fresh in my mind. I saw much of Lillian and Mary Dodds
during the 16 days of my stay in London. Their apartment is very near
the Dorchester Hotel where I was .staying. Whenever it was possible I
found it very restful and delightful to go there and take dinner with
them and sit about in their very pleasant living room, talking everything
over.
Your daughter is, I think, very well and also very well adjusted to
this wartime life. However, after her three years service it seems to
me that she ought to profit by a recent ruling and have a month's leave so
that she can come home and see you all. I am making this recommendation.
As you probably know, Alice Olson is now in this country on leave from her
African assignment. I was very happy to see for myself just what the
girls are doing. I think Lillian has done a very excellent piece of work,
not always under circumstances that made it easy to do good work. I hope
that our plans for improving some of the conditions will make the next
phase of what they are all doing am easier one and perhaps more productive.
However, it is very hard to speculate now on how long anything will continue.
The chief things wanted to say is that I left Lillian very well,
that she sends you lots of love, and that I am very proud of her.
