Extracted from letter from Miss Torrance to Miss Noyes, 3/5/24, from Bulgaria.
Your letter of January 30 was recieved some few days ago. You will no doubt
be relieved to know that I agree to stay on here until the fall of 1925. The
first class consisting of one student will finish her 2 years 9 months course
December 1925. If it is going to be possible to continue this American program
for a five year period altogether it would mean American personnel until the
spring of 1928. My decision is made under protest and only because I am
in volved to a considerable degree by this time in obligation to the girls
whom I have admitted as students. I do not want to be so long in a foreign
country. I do not want to do training school work. I do not want to be as much
as 39 years old when I begin to find myself at home. My offer and agreement in
the first place was to be here until last of June 1923. as associate of assistant
to the real director. I appreciate that my stay here until this time and longer
was decided with my appointment as Dir ector soonafter I came. but I did not
realize it at that time. Miss LeGros, I feel, does not qualify for Director,
and in any case she does not want the work, and of course it would be about
impossible to find someone who would want to come on and pick up the tag ends of
anothers work in this case. In Copenhagen I told you as I remember, that I wante
ed to stay here certainly until the right person is found for the palce, but that
I hoped for early release - as early as possible. I was anxious to come here
in the first place I wanted very much to pick up my old associations here, and
to do something to put Nursing Service, "on the map". Perhaps I was unduly
solicious considering that I wanted only to help start the work. In any case
the question of my release cannot be indefinite any longer. as you say. A definit
plan is necessary both for myself and for the best operation of the program
here. I have for the last month and more said to my associates in the work, and t
to the students that I shall be here until fall of 1925. I see no other way
of completing the obligations towards the students which I have become involved
in. I do hope that American nurses may be continued here until the spring of
1928, for a less period is bound to be unsatisfactory but my engagement ends
in about October1925. You may decide before that time tomrelease me, for, al-
