Poradna "Nasim Detim"
Kinsky Palace,
Staronestske Nam., Prs
Czechoslowakia.
Dear Miss Evans,
So long I have meant to write you! and I wonder if you ever
can forgive the for not writing before. A few teeks ago I sent a letter to
Miss Wiltse as Chairman of the "West Side Scholarship" and I suppose you have
seen that - at least I hoped you would learn through that of the kind of work
I am doing, i.e., have been doing. On withdrawal of the ARC the whole
program was taken over by the Ministry of Health of this government and I am
left here in Prague for a fem weeks as Consulting Public Health Nurse or
Advisory P.H.N. in the new Department. A meeting of the Committee took place
the other day when the policies and routines were definitely decised on,
the 21 child health centers willbe continued on practically the same lines
as they have been, the same personnel being retained. It is quite remarkable
we think, that after only the one year's demonstration all of the centers are
being continued. I should say all but one which is closed because of
peculiar dissensions growing out of the fact that the town objects to the arrea
gement.
In 15 of the 20 centers we have graduate nurses from the
school here in Prague or a school in Vienna, and we have very good nurse
to supervise the nursing side of the work from headquarters. She is also
a graduate of the School in Prague and is selected to be sent to the U. S.
by the International Health Board for a year's study beginning next
February.
Prague is so interesting as is also the whole country.
My work has been that of Nursing Field Supervisor, Miss Pansy Besom of
Boston being the Director, so I've had x opportunity to become fairly well
cquainted with the country. It is very fertile and there are many
industries, textile, glass, porcelain, sugar, etc, and there are coal,
silver and some stone mines. So there should be no misery of poverty,
in the country, but the last few years have been so upsetting to organiza-
tion that there is a good deal of just such misery, and consequently a
1 rge `ield of Social Medical work such as this is.
It is so interesting to study a little bit the history of
the country of which there is a great deal. The Czechs are such arient
admirers of their past glory, you get impatient with them sometimes and
wish they would put more effort on progress of the present day, but they
are making really good strides considering the newness of their government,
and the strangeness here of public welfare service in general. Since the
war some very good institutions have made a s'art, but they lack energy.
I enclose a questionnaire which came a few weeks ago.
Best wishes to you and all my good friends. I have meat
to write Miss Crocker, but so long a time has slipped by, I feel alrost
ashamed to make a start.
Sincerely yours,
Sent in for our filus 1-22
