Turnbull\nDecember 10, 1942\nElizabeth Steel Magee Hospital\nPittsburgh, Pennsylvania\nMy dear Miss Turnbull:\nIn accordance with the nomination made by the Board of Directors of the\nPennsylvania State Nurses' Association, we are pleased to appoint you to member-\nchairman for\nship on the State Committee on Red Cross Nursing Service to serve as\nanother year. We are attaching hereto a Change Form which indicates the appointments\nand reappointments made in the Pennsylvania State Committee at this time.\nThe State Committees on Red Cross Nursing Service are growing in importance due\nto the rapid developments in the war situation which necessitates more effective\nstate-wide planning with all nursing organizations. Membership, functions, and\nrelationships are outlined in the attached mimeographed material, which should be\ncarefully studied and discussed with other members of the Committee in order that\nall may have a clear understanding of the place of the Committee in the development\nof state nursing activities.\nThe present national emergency calls for greater emphasis upon disaster pre-\nparedness, which must necessarily involve Local Committees on Red Cross Nursing\nService and the local Red Cross chapters; hence the recommendation that all Local\nCommittees on Red Cross Nursing Service be represented on the State Committee by the\nofficers so that they may share in planning objectives for the state as a whole.\nIt is quite important that the State Committee on Red Cross Nursing Service be\nrepresented on the State Nursing Council on Defense in order to avoid overlapping\nor duplication of effort at a time when unity of purpose and speedy action are vital.\nSuch representation should provide a channel for proper clearance of all activities\ndelegated to the American Red Cross.\nThe State Committee on Red Cross Nursing Service is responsible for planning an\nappropriate Red Cross program for the annual meeting of the State Nurses' Associa-\ntion which should be done in cooperation with the program committee. The attached\nagenda and program suggestions are offered as guides in making the necessary\narrangements.\nWith appreciation of your interest as evidenced by your willingness to serve on\nyour State Committee on Red Cross Nursing Service, I am\nSincerely yours,\nMary Beard\nDirector, Nursing Service\n-68056-"
