Nurses arriving in New York after 5 P, M. or on Saturday afternoon or Sunday
should communicate with the Central Club. 132 East 45th Street, phone Murray Hall
8700, or with the Park Avenue Hotel, 32 Street and 4th Avenue, Murray Hill 3500,
with whom arrangements have been made for your board. You will be well taken care
of at either of these places until the office is opened.
One nurse in each group is selected by Miss Johnson as the head nurse and
until they arrive in Paris and report to the répresentative of the Nursing Ser-
vice, Miss Júlia Stimson, at 4 Place de La Concorde, Paris, she acts as such.
This nurse is also-in charge of nurses' aids who may sail on the same ship.
Nurses assigned to service under the Red Cross over seas should understand
that we cannot promi se a definite assignment to any nurse. They are selected
for service with reference to their preparation for special types of work and
are assigned by the répresentatives of the Nursing Service overseas accordingly,
although changing conditions may make this temporarily impossible. They are ex-
pected, therefore, under such circumstances, to accept such assignment as may be
given them, without question.
Nurses serving in foreign countries under the Red Cross are under serious
ethical obligations not only to the nursing profession but to the Red Cross whom
they represent. They should bear in mind that any slight act of indiscretion or
thoughtlessness on their part may lay the Red Cross Nursing Service and the nurs-
ing profession of America open to serious criticism. Conditions under which they
may be working may call for a complete readjustment of their method of living and
working and their outlook upon life. We do not look upon your assignment to over-
seas duty as a sacrifice but as a glorious privilege and an opportunity to carry
the spirit of nursing and the spirit of the Red Cross wherever you may go.
We shall watch your work with great interest through the reports that are
submitted to us by the representative of the Nursing Service in the country where
you may be serving,
