1940 M rs 1970 ANN MAGNUSSEN AWARD Mrs. Marjorie D. Wallace Chairman, Nursing Programs M Misawa Air Base, Japan E. As chairman of Nursing Care programs, Mrs. Wallace coordinated a highly successful Mother and Baby Care Course. She adapted an enriched cur- riculum to the needs of the families on Wakkanai Air station, utilizing mili- tary and community facilities (legal office, physician and military nurses). During the six week session, Mrs. Wallace identified the need for additional assistance for the Japanese mother, recruited a Japanese medical interpretor and held special separate classes for these mothers. Afterwards, she made several home visits to assist new parents with problems that arose in the home environment after the baby's arrival. In addition, she was the coordinator of the Mother's Aide Course, whereby 70 of the base youth participated and were certified. Mrs. Wallace also acts as a hospital assistant. Her help has enabled military nurses to carry on other activities as necessary. In the hospital and the community she constantly provides health education to base personnel. When aware of illness in a home, she usually calls the family to inquire if she can be of assistance. Wakkanai Air Station is without a full time school health nurse. One day each week she provides emergency first aid, health education and communi- cation between student school and family. 266310
