for Red Cross volunteers, expediting the efficiency of casework. She then
established a schedule of continuous coverage by the caseworkers. Again she
conducted an effective television and radio publicity campaign concerning
the work of the caseworkers, thereby educating the base personnel about the
Red Cross services available to them. Mrs. Wallace is a superior caseworker.
She is sought by families in financial difficulty for counsel and information
pertaining to the benefits of Red Cross loans and grants. Wakkanai Air
Station's remote location causes numerous problems in maintenance of communi-
cation between servicemen and their families in the United States. Mrs.
Wallace provides individualized attention to each inquiry concerning the
health and welfare of servicemen stationed here. In each situation she
personally interviews the serviceman and helps the people to establish a
satisfactory method of communication.
.
Mrs. Wallace has an unusually fine ability to provide emotional support
to persons receiving emergency messages. In some emergency situations, Mrs.
Wallace has driven or walked in severe weather to locate servicemen and
families to provide assistance and counsel. Because of the remote environ-
ment it is often quite complicated to evacuate servicemen or their dependents.
However, Mrs. Wallace works continuously with both the family and the military
until the involved party has been evacuated. She is aware of the needs of
the entire family and assists the family in planning for the period when the
member is away. She often assists in providing financial loans, mother's
aides, and necessary travel information.
In addition I would like to mention that Mrs. Wallace has been nominated
for the Military Wife of the Year Award for her many hours of volunteer/
community service, truly a hallmark of her outstanding leadership and
devotion to her fellow man.
