TO THE JUDGES OF THE ANN MAGNUSSEN AWARD:
Dear Sirs:
Mrs. Verna Wilkinson, who has been the Nursing Services Director
of the American Red Cross at Charlotte, North Carolima, since 1960,
would seem to be a most outstanding candidate for recipient of the
Ann Magnussen Award.
She has taken an active interest in the general betterment of
this community since her arrival here. She has a knowledgable back-
ground familiarity with American Red Cross programs and courses and
does not hesitate to find ways to modify the existing programs to meet
community needs. My personal interpretation of her ingenuity and
versatility is that she is firmly convinced that if the programs offered
to a community cannot meet a specific need they are of no value. From
there she sets about to interpret the need, and interpret where ARC can
help.
It is a joy to work with her. One has but to express the function
of one's group, tell of the background, illustrate with situations, and
her insight and experience moves out in an intuitive way, "with you" in
the planning sessions. From there on the teacher, the leader, moves on
with a deep civic interest and her own personal warmth of personality,
to put the plans into action and initiate the training.
In a world where many people are reluctant to get away from the
routine or the specialized function of one's own domain it is refreshing
to know a Verna Wilkinson. In one person there is knowledge, flexibility,
practicality, and the all important ability to communicate. A lot of the
things that she does are done over and above the responsibilities for
which she is paid.
For capability that is out of the ordinary Mrs. Wilkinson is
certainly deserving of the recognition that this award would bestow upon her.
Sincerely,
Streat Clue
