NORTH CAROLINA 28202\nTO THE JUDGES OF THE ANN MAGNUSSEN AWARD:\nDear Sirs:\nMrs. Verna Wilkinson, who has been the Nursing Services Director\nof the American Red Cross at Charlotte, North Carolima, since 1960,\nwould seem to be a most outstanding candidate for recipient of the\nAnn Magnussen Award.\nShe has taken an active interest in the general betterment of\nthis community since her arrival here. She has a knowledgable back-\nground familiarity with American Red Cross programs and courses and\ndoes not hesitate to find ways to modify the existing programs to meet\ncommunity needs. My personal interpretation of her ingenuity and\nversatility is that she is firmly convinced that if the programs offered\nto a community cannot meet a specific need they are of no value. From\nthere she sets about to interpret the need, and interpret where ARC can\nhelp.\nIt is a joy to work with her. One has but to express the function\nof one's group, tell of the background, illustrate with situations, and\nher insight and experience moves out in an intuitive way, \"with you\" in\nthe planning sessions. From there on the teacher, the leader, moves on\nwith a deep civic interest and her own personal warmth of personality,\nto put the plans into action and initiate the training.\nIn a world where many people are reluctant to get away from the\nroutine or the specialized function of one's own domain it is refreshing\nto know a Verna Wilkinson. In one person there is knowledge, flexibility,\npracticality, and the all important ability to communicate.
