1970 ANN MAGNUSSEN AWARD WINNER
Mrs. Verna Wilkinson

Within the past few years, Mrs. Wilkinson has served on the Gover-
nor's Council on Comprehensive Health Planning and Health Agencies of State
Government and the Health Task Force of the Charlotte Model Neighborhood
Commission.
She has been responsible for training volunteers to teach hundreds
of courses in Home Nursing and Mother and Baby Care, particularly in cooper-
ation with local community groups to carry needed Red Cross programs to econ-
omically deprived sections of the community.
She was one of four nurses selected to revise the manual "How to
Provide Nursing Service for lisasterVictims.'
She began a training course for babysitters for the Girl Scouts and
developed a Mother and Baby Care course for a domestic help agency. Accord-
ing to the executive secretary of that agency, "With Mrs. Wilkerson's help
and guidance, we have been able to train thirty-seven women for better posi-
tions. This enables the women to increase from $25.00 to a trained person at
a salary of $75 weekly. This, we feel, has been one of the greatest accomplish-
ments we have even encountered. It helps us to help ourselves and to become
more efficient and to upgrade our profession."
She has been responsible for staffing 77 polio immunization clinics
with volunteers, has developed a mother and baby care course in Spanish to be
taught to Cuban families and was instrumental in having a Red Cross disaster
