-2- In 1960 Verna resigned her position with the national organization and came to the Mecklenburg County Chapter (now Greater Carolinas Chapter) as director of nursing programs. A very kind and warm human being, Verna has worked diligently and effec- tively in developing and promoting Red Cross Nursing Programs within Charlotte and in North Carolina. She has been extremely successful in gaining the support of community organizations in implementing nursing programs. In 1961 she was instrumental in having a Red Cross disaster nursing course taught in three schools of Nursing. It is still being taught. In 1962 she campaigned for better care for the aged and taught many Care of the Sick and Injured courses to garden club members. In 1963 she saw a need within a new community of people growing up in Mecklenburg County and developed a Mother and Baby Care course in Spanish to be taught to Cubans settling here. In cooperation with the Mecklenburg County Medi- cal Society, she recruited volunteers to staff clinics for tetanus immunization. In 1964 she continued this work and staffed 77 polio immunization clinics with volunteers. In 1966 she started courses for babysitters for the Girl Scouts of America. She developed Mother and Baby Care course for Domestics United. Also in 1966 she was one of seven Red Cross nurses from Southeastern Area selected to attend the workshop at Indiana University Medical Center where the Red Cross Programmed In- struction Course in Home Nursing was introduced. In 1968 she was one of four nurses selected from all of the American Red Cross to revise the manual "How to Provide Nursing Service for Disaster Victims." She worked tirelessly and enthusiastically on all these projects and many others within and outside of Red Cross. She taught and trained many volunteers to teach hundreds of courses in Home Nursing and Mother and Baby Care. She
