The Division of Transportation will sond you definite instruct- ions, concerning your date of sailing and all other necessary information, and may I request that you do not leave your home until you have received and executed these instructions. This is essential if you are to secure your passport promptly. I am enclosing a circular of information which gives you detailed instructions concerning the service. I would suggest that you secure immediately a copy of your birth certificate and that you have three (3) dozen photographs made, the size of the head to be not more than 1 by inches in order to fit some of the papers, and no hat should be worn. These photographs should cost not more than 50 cents to one dollar a dozen and should be secured as reasonably as possible. In the cities where there is frequent request for passports the regulation photographs can be obtained for about this price. The term of service is for the period of the War, but nurses may be released at the expiration of one year if the reasons given for release meet with approval. Nurses sent over under the Red Cross are expected to remain in this service and requests for transfer to the military service cannot be considered. You are allowed salary from date of leaving home to date on which you are booked to sail. If you are held in New York after that time the additional sal- ary will be paid in France. The salary is $70.00 a month and you may make any allotment you desire of this salaey before leaving this country. After sailing, howeber, there can be no change made in the method of payment of salaries. Forms for this purpose will be sent you later by the Department of Personnel. All business arrangements are made by the Bureau of Transportation whose instructions you will receive, and may I repeat that you should not leave your home until you have received these instructions and carried them out. You should report as soon after arrival in New York as possible to Miss Florence Johnson at 44 East 23rd Street.
