AMERICAN RED CROSS Hawaii Chapter o o HONOLULU ACADEMY OF ARTS HONOLULU 34, HAWAII, U.S. A. May26,1945. Miss Virginia Dunbar Director Nursing Service American Red Cross National Headquarters Washington, D.C. My dear Miss Dunbar: Miss Elizabeth Wright 1527B Wilder Ave. Wright Honolulu, T.H. has talked with me concerning a matter she wishes held in strictest confidence, therefore please handle it as you see fit. She applied for the Army Nurse Corps and her credentials were duly assembled. Recently she has received a letter from national headquarters stating that she was rejected or not eligible or words to that effect. If her references were the cause, she thinks the following will explain it. The years she worked as a nurse, completed her college work etc., she was a Catholic sister and was known in these places as Sister M. deLellis c.s.c. not as Miss Elizabeth Wright. Apparently it is against tradition or the rules of the order for both names to be known or recorded. Therefore in strictest confidence she told me her name as a sister in order that her records might be cleared. Therefore I believe, if the references were the reason for her refusal, it would be worthwhile to write to her school and hospitals and ask about Sister M. de Lellis, C.S.C. which was Miss Wright's name during these years. I do not believe it is proper to mention both names in a letter but you may know all about these things. She gave two references for confirmation of her story: Mother M. Rose Elizabeth C.S.C. Sisters of the Holy Cross Notre Dame, Indiana Mother M. Vincentia c.s.c. Sisters of the Holy Cross Notre Dame, Indiana Please act as you think best concerning Miss Wright and advise me if I may assist in any way. Sincerely his Mrs. Nina Cobb Nurse Recruitment secretary
