To whom are they awarded?
Workers who have given 200 hours or more in
organized volunteer service or 12 months or
more of satisfactory paid service between Jan-
uary 1, 1940 and the official close of the war.
Persons who have served for a shorter time but
have given effective service of special signi-
ficance may be considered for the award, sub-
ject to the approval of the Chairman or the
appropriate representative of the National
Organization.
Distributed: To the staff of National Headquarters
through Personnel Service at National Head-
quarters, or to area staffs through Area direct-
ors of Personnel Service, with a letter of trans-
mittal over the signature of the Chairman.

American Red Cross, or have given, in the
opinion of the American Red Cross commissioner,
delegate, or representative in the country
concerned, effective service of special signi-
ficance of less than 200 hours or 12 months.

in the foreign country.

issued a pin or button (pins for women and
buttons for men).
Where is it worn?
On ordinary dress only, never on the uniform.
Distributed: To individuals through Personnel
Service at National Headquarters at the time
certificate is issued, replacements may be
purchased from mailroom on presentation of
proper certification by Personnel Service

WORLD WAR II VOLUNTEER SERVICE RIBBON BAR
Who wears it?
Any volunteer worker who has served with the
American Red Cross for 12 months without ref-
erence to the hours of service, within the
period beginning January 1, 1940 until the
official close of the war. To denote actual
hours of service rendered or their equivalent
as determined by the chapter chairman, area
manager, or head of Service, stripes are
affixed to the bar as follows; a silver stripe
is added for each unit of 500 hours uo to
4500; at 5000 hours the 9 silver stripes are
replaced by a broad gold stripe; for each unit
of 1000 hours thereafter a narrow gold stripe
is added until another broad gold stripe is
earned. This procedure can be repeated as
far as it is required.

To whom is it awarded?
Posthumously and subject to the approval of the
National Chairman to any volunteer or paid work-
ers, full or part time, who died in the service
of the American Red Cross during World War II,
in this country or overseas, and as a result of
service rendered on behalf of the American Red
Cross, provided it is shown that death occurred
during his or her active war service with the
American Red Cross. Nurses recruited or en-
rolled by the American Red Cross are eligible
for this award provided that their death occurred
during their active war service in World War II.

SILVER MEDAL
To whom is it awarded?
To any citizen or resident of a foreign country
who has participated with special distinction
and in an outstanding manner in operations of
the American Red Cross overseas during World
War II, subject to the approval of the National
Chairman.
Awarded: By the National Chairman of the American
Red Cross, on the recommendation of the re-
sponsible commissioner, delegate or representa-
tive of the American Red Cross in the country
concerned.
