Dear Ann:
I think the attached may help. It is a duplicate of the
file Mr. Jackson has used as his atomic pool "bible",
and to which he has referred whenever he has discussed
the matter.
It seemed a good idea last year, before memories faded, to
pin all these events down, so he wrote Admiral Strauss.
Admiral Strauss then responded, giving both his corrections
and additional details. The "chronology" of September 30,
1954 is the digest of that material.
With specific reference to The Reporter" article by Lear,
all Mr. Jackson said to him was that (a) the idea was
definitely the President's (b) that a message was relayed
from Denver to Strauss to Jackson (Mr. Jackson never
actually saw any memo - just heard about the pool from
Strauss, and does not know whether the original message
was oral or written. That paraphrased quote in the article
did not originate here. Hagerty, Cutler, and Strauss would
be good sources to check on the original form of the message.
Hope this helps you in your tracking-down operation. If
I can supply anything more, just let me know.
I'll give you a ring if the Lincoln Birthday weekend plans
work out.
Best love,
3

P.S. It occurs to me you may not know the code name "Wheaties".
"Candor" was revelation of atomic power; "Wheaties" picked
up from there for those speech drafts which included the
pool idea. First meeting on this theme full-dress was
that 10/3 White House breakfast. Hence - "Wheaties".
