RE:
Project HOPE
January 14, 1963
You will be happy to learn that the HOPE Cotillion was both a social
and financial success netting HOPE in excess of $38,000. Only your
presence was lacking to make the evening a complete smash.
I have received an invitation from Francis Brown to join the Board
of the People to People Health Foundation which, from a personal standpoint,
I would, naturally, be honored to accept. Wes Pullen, who is well aware of
the favorable impression HOPE is creating in Peru, is in favor of my accepting.
However, Barnie Barnes continues to view HOPE very dimly, and he thinks that
my accepting will only lock Time Inc. into financially supporting HOPE --
which he frankly opposes. Knowing of your interest in HOPE, however,
Barnie suggested I take the matter up with you on your return.
I certainly don't want to accept if there is any doubt about Time Inc's
continued support of HOPE, since I have been simply an instrument of Time
Inc's benificence. On the other hand, if LIFE intends to stick with HOPE
I will be glad to help you in any way I can. How say you?
