AN APPROVED T THE R EDUCATIONAL TRAVEL INSTITUTE PEOPLE PEOPLE TRAMEL ACTIVITY A presents THE HISTORY OF PEOPLE-TO-PEOPLE V Before his administration was two years old, President E Eisenhower had formed the conviction that improved HIGH international relations- goal to which he had dedi- L cated himself and which was traditionally conducted on a government-to-government basis-might now SCHOOL also be approached along a new and wholly untradi- tional path. W He visualized the enormous amount of good that AN APPROVED might result if individual citizens of the United States, I in great numbers, would simply undertake to know personally and understand the citizens of other coun- tries, and if they, in turn, would undertake to know T PEOPLE to PEOPLE and understand Americans. H TRAMEL ACTIVITY Acting on his conviction, he called a conference in 1956 of Americans who, he felt, would be most interested in inaugurating such a program. It would be called People-to-People, he suggested, and would encourage A STUDENT Americans at all levels to establish contacts with people in other lands in the hundreds of ways that Americans for generations had developed for making AMBASSADOR friends. The new program continued its work through- out the Eisenhower administration. P At the close of President Eisenhower's term of office, a board of trustees, consisting of outstanding American U PROGRAM business and cultural leaders was formed to continue the work of People-to-People. The organization was R incorporated in Missouri in November, 1961, and a national headquarters, providing a central authority P for all People-to-People activities, was established in A to A Kansas City. General Eisenhower agreed to serve as O chairman of the board of the nonprofit nongovernmen- tal organization. S A TRAVEL PROJECT FOR All presidents of the United States of America have served HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS as Honorary Chairman of People-to-People and President E Richard M.
