Personal Secretary to the President
The White House
Washington 25, D. C.
Dear Miss Whitman:
Thanks to your kind assistance, together with that
of Major Streiff, the current project of the Gardening
Committee of the People-to-People Program is enjoying tre-
mendous success in promoting German-American friendship
over the garden fence"
You will recall that we were able to secure some
squash from the President's farm which James Macfarland
took along with him and is now exhibiting at the Interna-
tional Kleingarten Congress, and various garden shows, in
Germany.
I am taking the liberty of enclosing, for your in-
formation, a re-print of a Congressional Record Statement
which Senator Wiley made shortly before Mr. Macfarland's
trip and which will give a resume of the project.
I'm sure you will be interested in an excerpt from
a letter received from James Macfarland today as follows:
"My 'mission is having a success 100 times greater than
I had anticipated. It is Ike's squash that is doing it.
The Germans are giving me a squash to take back to Eisen-
hower to show him their appreciation; and also to show him
that, although squash is only two years old in Germany,
they know how to grow it."
Would you have a suggestion as to how these German
squash might be presented to the President? I should ap-
preciate hearing from you in this connection.
With best wishes, I am
the
Robert E. yours Cole ble
