Original Exhibition Caption: During 1940-1941, FDR engaged in a war of words with famed aviator Charles A. Lindbergh on the issue of American support for the nations fighting the Axis Powers. Lindbergh was a prominent opponent of any U.S. involvement in the war. During an April 1941 press conference, a reporter asked FDR whether Lindbergh, a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps Reserves, should be called into active duty. The President indicated that was unlikely and described Lindbergh as an "appeaser" of dictators. Lindbergh defends himself in this letter and announces his resignation from the Reserves.
