R. Of course, I\ncan understand that a man might labor under the disadvantage\nof not having a sound elementary education, but at least he\nshould have learned, and when I say \"he\" I refer to all of them,\nthat, when he or they add to that sort of a weakness a delu-\nsion of grandeur, he and they are in a sad way. The\nbanks apparently are not functioning; no major loan of any\nimportance has been made in the past year and a half that\nhas come to my notice that was not made by your \"Uncle Sam-\nuel\" functioning through the RFC, and it just looks to me\nas though your \"Uncle Samuel\" will have to be in the banking\nbusiness and if the grand old man can make a worse \"fizzle\"\nof it than those that have been at the head of them\nthen he isothe sharp and shrewd Yankee that he has been\npictured.\nI am taking the liberty of sending to you, under\nseparate cover, a little book which contains some speeches\nand essays by a grand old character who many years ago was\ncalled to his Fathers. I speak of Archbishop Spaulding,\nof Peoria, Illinois. The old man in this book made the best\ncase that I have ever read against the \"lice\" who have ex-\nploited this country during the past twenty years. His\nstatement of facts and logical conclusions to be deduced\ntherefrom were indictments of the old order but the old man\nsought to turn it into an argument in support thereof. The\nbook is full of \"meat\", it is short, you can read it in an\nhour. He is a splendid stylist of the old school, and\ntaken all in all was one of the wondersul men developed in\nthe hierarchy of my grand old church. If you get as much\nout of the Archbishop's book as I have gotten in the past,\nyou will consult it from time to time when you are looking\nfor a telling phrase or a well-termed sentence, or for a\nsound argument, and you will find them all in the old Arch-\nbishop's text,\nIn conclusion, permit me to say, my dear Mr.\nPresident, that there is nothing that you have that I want,\nsa ve and except your \"good will\" and that I flatter myself\nI already have, but whether I have or have not is beside\nthe question.
