President Roosevelt
Washington, D. C.
Honerable President:
I am sending you under separate cover an emblem which I think
fulfills the ideals and aims of all the people of the United
States and its Allies.
We are proud the initials of you, our Commander and Chief,
stand for everything our boys are fighting for. Your initials,
as well as the principles they represent, will go down in history
and be remembered not only here, but all over the world. This
emblem is also especially fitting for the Democratic Party.
Mr. Gilbert Phillips of Kearney, Nebraska, and myself, have
this emblem copyrighted and patent applied for, and feel it
a great privilege to send you the first made.
We would consider it a great honor to hear from you upon receipt
of this, and will greatly appreciate any comments you may have
to offer.
Respectfully yours,
P. H. Behrens & Gilbert Phillips

1942 P.
April 6th,
His Excellency,
The President of the United States,
White House,
Washington, D.C.
Dear Mr. President,
Silver Eagle which we have recently received from
We are herewith sending you a George III
our London Office. This Eagle was made in the city
of London, in the year, 1823.
Although made over 100 years ago, this
proud and powerful bird, even at that time, personi-
fied the spirit of the American people to fight for
whatever they cherish and hold dear. The Eagle as
the national emblem of the United States and which
represents its citizens, brings assurance of safety
wherever it appears.
It therefore occured to me, Mr. President,
that as you are so symbolic of the aroused spirit of
the American people, that you might care to use this
bird as a paper weight on your desk. It would give
me great pleasure in your accepting this gift.
Best wishes for your health and a quick
triumph of the forces of the United Nations to Victory,
I have the honor to salute you,
Yours faithfully,

My dear Mr. Blount:
The President has asked me to
thank you for your thoughtfulness in send-
ing him a copy of "Eyes Light." He is de-
lighted to have it, and wants you to know of
his real appreciation.
I am indeed sorry that we cannot
arrange for you to call on the President
during your stay in Washington. I know I
do not have to explain to you, however, how
difficult it is during these critical war
days for the President to make personal ap-
pointments of this kind. As a matter of fact,
he has, since the declaration of war, been
confining his engagements to those bearing
directly on the war effort.
The President sends you his best
wishes, in which I join.
Very sincerely yours,
