As you know, the President is deeply attached to the sea and to everything pertaining to it. xora I am sure, upon reflection, you will understand why it would not be feasible for the President to take the initiative in the matter of X18 making this volume available to the Navy. Never- theless, he greatly appreciates your willingness to cooperate. Very sincerely yours, STEPHEN EARLY Secretary to the President over, Reverend Samuel Ferguson, 851 Prospect Avenue, Hartford, Connecticut. wdh-mms STE Actiged. 7/8/42 851 PROSPECT AVENUE HARTFORD, CONN. Mr. Franklin Study D. Roosevelt June 29, 1942 Commander-in-Chief P.P.F. United States Navy Washington, D. C. Honorable Sir: copy of a despatch rican flag of nandu Your well-known interest in naval and Estados Unidos de sea affairs prompts me to send you the American Ambassador enclosed reprint of the diaries of my an appropriate exp father and uncle covering their forty- the gracious gift three day voyage in an open boat after the destruction of their ship by fire. The trip and their survival is more remarkable than in the case of the crew mc of the BOUNTY (The original is in the custody of the Mariner's Museum, Newport News, Virginia.) My motive in the submission, is however, more than your possible personal interest and arises from a remark of Admiral Brown, who read the JOURNAL recently after being assigned to shore duty. He stated that if he had possessed a copy when in command of his ship, he would have liked to have made some compulsory reading in order to instill in his men -- if ever under similar conditions -- a feeling of hope and faith rather than of despair. over I could easily have printed a special édition for ship libraries and the use of the Navy Chaplainsif you cared to endorse and order such an application of the book to t he Navy. Respectfully submitted, Rev. Samuel Janguson termen WOODWARD, Stanley P.P.F.9-"7" F. C. Dear Mr. President: Please do me the honor to accept this cane. It was made by my father in 1886. At his death I became heir to it. It is a Texas product, the head being made of Black Haw root. The little hook is an off shoot from the main root. Notice the eagle's head near the top, also the dog's head near the lower end of the cane. I don't use a cane, as I don't need one, yet. I am only 84 years old. It is a stout cane and will support a large man's weight. Sincerely yours, W.D.Forancis W. D.
