It puts into type and pictures the old American Spirit in about as clear and convincing a way as you could find in a day's journey. And in the modern style. no time lost on phrases. I got interested in the book by having it introduced to me by Frank Buchman, the Oxford Group leader. Moral Re-Armament, you know. It appealed to me as something to be boosted, talked about, distributed. Hence I am doing my part. I've spoken of it on the air; sent copies to leaders and have tried to help work out a way to get it into the hands of everybody. Millions of them. C 0 Camp New Derreen P Grand Cascapedia Y Province of Quebec July 31st,1941 Dear Miss LeHand:- I got a fresh-run salmon last night, which I sent to the President today. I hope it arrives in good condition and that he enjoys it. Tell him with my kind regards and good wishes, I am so grateful for him to keep America out of war. We would have to stop sending so much to England, and I do feel when all this terrible time is over, if we are not ourselves exhausted, we shall be able to help everybody, and perhaps stave off revolution - I keep wondering if he is planning for Peace. We should have all our wisest and best brains here and in England trying to have a workable scheme ready so that we can offer helpful suggestions. If America, England and Germany could get together they might remake the world into something "Nearer to the heart's desire" - Hate, revenge and bitterness only SOW the seeds for more wars. I am going to write to one office and ask them to send you the June and July Reader's Digest. - There are some very helpful ideas and it is full of what Germany is doing for the war. Also there is a new drug, Sulphathiazoll they should look into and use for our Army. I had a hospital in London for over three years, in my home, and then I lent it to the American's for a Naval Hospital. Of course I did not run that but I was in touch with them and I felt very badly so many of our men were down with diseases they should have been protected from contracting. I talked to Dr. William Osler who was a great friend of my Father's and my consulting physician, in my hospital at Aldford House.- I asked him why London could not have been made a more decent place for men home on leave. He told me if the Government would give him a free hand he would clean up London in a month. I passed on the information, but very little was done I fear - Anyhow, I understand Sulphiazoll is good for many things. My brother, Jay Phipps, gives it to his COWS and brood mares with wonderful results. It cleans out old troubles of many kinds - infected hands, or mastoiditis can be cleared up without operations if taken in time. I have heard so much about it, I felt I would like to draw the President's attention to it, if he is not already informed about it. C #2 0 P Y Will you read what Hitler is doing with 1000 scientists helping him in the war, and how the German war is run? It is marvelous! We should do the same, only much better. Many of the ideas he uses were American. In the last war I was close in touch with things and it was pitiful the jealousy and obstruction between the Army and Navy. I read in Germany the brilliant young officer is made to go through the infantry, the aviation and the Navy. He knows and understands all these services, hence their wonderful co-operation and co-ordination. They work understandingly together - not apart. Forgive so long a letter. What I have written that seems helpful bring, if you approve, to the President's attention. I hope it arrives in good condition and that he\nenjoys it.\nTell him with my kind regards and good wishes, I am so\ngrateful for him to keep America out of war. We would have to\nstop sending so much to England, and I do feel when all this terrible\ntime is over, if we are not ourselves exhausted, we shall be able\nto help everybody, and perhaps stave off revolution -\nI keep wondering if he is planning for Peace. We should have\nall our wisest and best brains here and in England trying to have a\nworkable scheme ready so that we can offer helpful suggestions. If\nAmerica, England and Germany could get together they might remake\nthe world into something \"Nearer to the heart's desire\" - Hate,\nrevenge and bitterness only SOW the seeds for more wars. I am going to\nwrite to one office and ask them to send you the June and July Reader's\nDigest. - There are some very helpful ideas and it is full of what\nGermany is doing for the war. Also there is a new drug, Sulphathiazoll\nthey should look into and use for our Army. I had a hospital in London\nfor over three years, in my home, and then I lent it to the American's\nfor a Naval Hospital. Of course I did not run that but I was in touch\nwith them and I felt very badly so many of our men were down with\ndiseases they should have been protected from contracting. I talked\nto Dr. William Osler who was a great friend of my Father's and my\nconsulting physician, in my hospital at Aldford House.- I asked him\nwhy London could not have been made a more decent place for men home\non leave. He told me if the Government would give him a free hand he\nwould clean up London in a month. I passed on the information, but\nvery little was done I fear - Anyhow, I understand Sulphiazoll is good\nfor many things. My brother, Jay Phipps, gives it to his COWS and\nbrood mares with wonderful results. It cleans out old troubles of\nmany kinds - infected hands, or mastoiditis can be cleared up without\noperations if taken in time. I have heard so much about it, I felt\nI would like to draw the President's attention to it, if he is not already\ninformed about it.\nC\n#2\n0\nP\nY\nWill you read what Hitler is doing with 1000 scientists\nhelping him in the war, and how the German war is run? It is\nmarvelous! We should do the same, only much better. Many of the\nideas he uses were American. In the last war I was close in\ntouch with things and it was pitiful the jealousy and obstruction\nbetween the Army and Navy. I read in Germany the brilliant young\nofficer is made to go through the infantry, the aviation and the\nNavy. He knows and understands all these services, hence their\nwonderful co-operation and co-ordination. They work understandingly\ntogether - not apart.\nForgive so long a letter. What I have written that seems\nhelpful bring, if you approve, to the President's attention.\nWith kind regards,\nSincerely yours,\nAmy Guest\nStudy\nStudy\nAugust 25, 1941\nF\nMy dear Mr. Grinnell:\nMany thanks in the President's behalf\nfor the copy of DEATH AND TAXES.
