My dear Mr. President:
The Independent Grocers' Alliance of America
(The I.G.A.) is sending you, in time for your birthday,
an "All-American" cake, baked in the shape of the map
of the United States.
This cake is the counter-part of "the largest
cake in the world" which featured our Baking Products
Marketing Conference held in Chicago.
The "All-American" cake recipe was chosen as
the favorite recipe of 1,500,000 housewives in thousands
of independent I.G.A. stores from coast to coast. It is
a white cake with chocolate fudge icing.
We join with all America in wishing you health
and happiness on this joyous occasion and the many more
which lie before you and the beloved nation you lead.
Faithfully yours,
Jrank President

Dear Mr. President:
In this the territorial centennial anniversary year
of Iowa, and on the occasion of Air Mail Week, the members of
the Iowa State Dairy Association are pleased to send you by
air mail a tub of Iowa prize winning creamery butter.
This butter was made by Dr. N. E. Fabricius, instructor
in butter manufacture of Iowa State College, Ames, whose entry in
the World's Dairy Congress held in Berlin, Germany last year re-
ceived a perfect score. Dr. Fabricius also won nine first prizes
in the same number of National contests held during 1937, thus
gaining for him the title of world's champion buttermaker.
Iowa, which stands first among the states in the pro-
duction of many agricultural products, ranks second in butter
production. Last year we produced 198,565,814 lbs. of butter,
which added $66,555,000. to the state's income. While Iowan's
are pleased with this quantity production of one of the most
important human foods, they are exceedingly proud of the general
high quality of butter made in the state.
Those engaged in the dairy industry, as well as all
citizens of Iowa, join me in presenting this gift and express-
ing the hope that you and the members of your household will
enjoy it.
Yours sincerely,
IOWA STATE DAIRY ASSOCIATION

Dear Mr. President:-
On behalf of our organization, may I have the
pleasure to enclose report of the Indiana Lincoln Memorial
by the Indiana Lincoln Union.
Its pages tell a concise story of thought and work
during the past twelve years. We, in these parts, know
that of all of the Lincoln memorials, it is the only one
which commemorates Lincoln's formative years spent in our
state from his seventh to his twenty-first year. Besides,
the sanctuary contains the grave of his Mother, Nancy Hanks.
We feel, therefore, that this hallowed spot is of
national significance and that its recognition in the group
of already existing Lincoln monuments, will serve as the
connecting link between his birthplace in Kentucky and his
resting place in Illinois.
I have the honor to remain,
Very respectfully yours,

Brought a small sailor, with note to the President referring to Capt. Callaghan,
Admiral Ross T. McIntire, and Mr. Claunch who was his Chief Yeoman before he came to
the White House. --- Attached is not to Gen. Watson, even date, saying that last fall
he brought to the office, as a gift for the President, an igloo rock-garden for which
he received no acknowledgment. Asked for an acknowledgment of these gifts from the
President. --- The President wrote to Admiral Larimer, thanking him for the two gifts and
saying it is a pleasure to be remembered by his old friends in the Navy.

My dear Mr President,
May I be permitted to add my tiny quota to the
future Hyde Park national library by offering you this little
volume, "Speeches of the Different Governors to the Legislature
of the State of New York 1825" ? I do not suppose it to be
a rarity, but it seemed particularly appropriate for you, Sir,
who were formerly Governor of this state and arenow, fortunately
for the world, head of this nation.
Since I am sure that, quite apart from politics, your
heart is not unconcerned with the feeling towards you of the
workers adversely affected by the Woodrum Act, I thought you
might like to know from a first-hand source that at none of the
meetings and conferences I attended nor even under the emotion-
al stress of dismissals as I observed them at my former project
or elsewhere was your name mentioned except as a source of
hope and comfort. Indeed, one poor old handyman went about in-
forming everyone that the firings were going to stop, for he
had written a letter to the President and told him all about it!
It is a marvelous thing and rare in history for any chief of any
nation so to have deserved and won the confidence of the poor.
Respectfully yours,
Sulamith

President Franklin D. Roosevelt,

Greetings:
You will please pardon my interruption of your daily
routine and if you can use it, I am offering you an ebony
walking cane, made by my World War Veteran husband from a
piece of an abandoned cross, that came from Mexico. He had
a little home work shop and did this from a tie sent to U.S.
to burn at Nogalis, Ariz. But it is not finished. Needs a
band to clasp handle, which is Mexican wood, too, Mahomy. But
some scoundrel (3) set fire to our shop. Though it was made
entirely of corrugated new tin and destroyed every piece of
machinery and lumber. About $1500 or $2000 worth and we have
nothing to band this cane with and there is nobody here who
can do work like that. I hesitate to send it unfinished but
decided as you wear a cane you could get some good from it.
Hence I send it and trust you may receive it in the same spirit
it is offered in. Because I am a Democrat and also my husband.
I am constrained to add to this letter also a statement
concerning a find I am sure some day in the near future will be
valuable. There is here a whole mountain 6 or 7 miles long and
165 feet deep of aluminum. It also assays out 32% aluminum
face powder. Very fine pottery clay, and tooth powder. The
folks here are too poor to finance the development of it and I
am asking you if you will put me in touch with someone, say the Du
Ponts, who are interested in developing and are not afraid to
invest.
There is also a couple of Iron Hills here that has been
asseyed and worked a little by the local people in the World War,
but abandonded. It estimates 3 or 4 million tons. Perhaps the
adjoining peaks more. I'd like to get on the ground floor of
these deals as my husband is 75% disabled and I soon may have to
take care of him, and myself. I am working very hard to keep

If it is not too much to ask of you, will you
kindly put me in touch with an opportunity to market this
ore. Nobody here knows where it could be marketed. I
expect the whole mountain could be bought for $15,000.
Thanking you in advance for any and all courtesies.
Best wishes to you and yours.

My dear Mr. President:
In response to many requests for the brochures
produced by the International Business Machines Corporation,
the company is sending two copies of this catalogue illus-
trating its art exhibits to museum directors throughout the
country. Under separate enclosure I am sending you both
brochures, one covering our exhibit at the New York World's
Fair and the other our show at the Golden Gate International
Exposition at San Francisco.
These exhibitions of Contemporary Art from 79
Countries, on view in our Gallery of Science and Art at both
Fairs, have, as you undoubtedly know, been accorded a warm
reception by leading art critics and press. They have been
viewed by more than three million visitors to the Fairs.
Many museums and colleges have expressed an interest in a
tour of the show, a project now under consideration.
The booklets on the two collections which you will
receive were prepared with the idea of providing in brief
form important information on the art of the many lands rep-
resented in this international exhibition. We shall be happy
if you find the brochures a serviceable addition to your
museum library.

My dear Mr. President:
It is my privilege to transmit to you a group of
colored drawings of ship carvings made by artists of the WPA
Index of American Design. It is my special pleasure to in-
clude one that I painted.
The four artists and I who did the drawings over a
period of four months in our spare time are confident that we
speak for all the artists employed on the Index of American
Design in offering you this gift in their names.
It is curiously ironical that on the very day on
which I composed the prefatory note for these portfolios a
notice of termination of my employment was handed me. Despite
the disappointment I naturally feel about being separated
after four and a half years I am, nevertheless, consoled by
the fact that in this time the Index of American Design has
accomplished a task that will forever be an enduring monument
to the work of the WPA.

Dear Mr. President:
During the recent Presidential campaign,
a song which won wide public favor was "The Franklin D.
Roosevelt Way," written by Harold J. Rome, author and com-
poser of our musical revue, "Pins and Needles."
The members of our International Union feel
that this song, which was dedicated to you 8.8 a great humani-
tarian, loved by all the working people of America, should be
presented to you a.s a memento of an historic campaign.
During your tour of the garment district in
New York City, several days before the election, the chorus of
the ILGWU greeted you with this song. They had also hoped to
have the privilege to present you, at that time, with a bound
copy of the words and music.
Not having had the opportunity to do so them-
selves, they have requested me, and I am happy indeed, to present
to you the enclosed words and music of this song, which embodies
within it the devotion and the gratitude of our entire membership
for your great contribution to the advancement of labor and the
preservation of our democratic institutions.
With kindest personal regards, I am
