is sent in case you should care to present it to Prime Minister
Churchill - with your own observations - appropos his remarks upon

the lessons in freedom the colonists taught to the mother country.
As I have said in the explanatory note printed on the docu-
ment, it was necessary to change the sequence of a few of the sig-
natures in order to have the text at the top of the sheet; but no
change whatever has been made otherwise. My special interest in
this document developed from assembling the genealogical data re-
quired by the Sons of the American Revolution for my son's member-
ship; and I decided to prepare the facsimile for the members of our
family who are descended from Alvin Moxley. I used my own signature
to the explanatory notes for specific identification since there may
be others of my name in the enlarged Army at this time;and in the
spirit of a belated subscriber to the document itself.
I am, Sir,

Dear Mr. Riley:
I am attaching hereto a letter to President Franklin Delano
Roosevelt and also a drawing of him, which I have done, and which I spoke to
you about on the telephone at 12.30 today. At that time you were kind enough
to state that you would see that the sketch reached the hands of the President's
secretary and therefore I am forwarding same to you for that purpose.
In closing my short note to you, may I extend my deep apprec-
iation to you for your kindness and I hope I am not inconveniencing you in any
way.
I remain,
Cordially yours,

Attach.
(Mr.) A. Kimpton.
64 Crichton Street,

August 24, 1943.
Dear Mr. President:
As you will see by the enclosed, I am somewhat of an
amateur artist and I have done this portrait sketch of you in the hope that
you will accept same with my very best wishes and admiration. I have never
had art lessons, just deriving a natural talent from my late father. During
the last four or five years I have had quite a bit of my work accepted by
many famous personages, such as Their Majesties the King and Queen, Prime
Minister Winston Churchill, Prime Minister MacKenzie King, Rt. Hon. Anthony
Eden, Air Marshall W. A. Bishop and Hon. C. D. Howe, besides many famous
sports and movie stars. I have always wanted to do one of you and, in fact,
I did do two about three years ago but they were forwarded to the wrong
authorities and failed to reach you. However, I do hope that this one gets
to you and that you like it. With it goes my deep admiration of a great
man and a great leader, and I might also add, with the same emphasis, a great
friend.
In case you should be interested I am not quite 23 years
of age and work in the Department of Munitions & Supply here in Ottawa. Due
to a leg injury shortly after birth, I am naturally unable to join His Majesty's
forces, a thing I shall always regret, but, however, after a long struggle with
the Department of National Defence, I did manage to get into the Reserve Army
so I feel I am doing a bit towards winning this war.
I suppose it would be asking too much to request a photo
of you, as I guess you are quite busy these days and naturally can't adhere
- 2 -
to all such requests. However, I should be most pleased to hear how you liked
my little effort and if you could send a small photo I should be deeply honoured
to add it to my collection.
I will close now with the hope that your all too short
stay in Ottawa is a pleasant one and that you have a safe journey back to
Washington. Hoping to have a favourable acknowledgement from you,
I remain,
Your obedient servant,
allan Simptor
(Mr.) Allan Kimpton.
P. S. I shall be on Parliament Hill to listen to your speech, and am hoping
to be able to get close enoughto you to get a photograph.
