Mr. Stephen Early
Dear Mr. Early:
It occurred to me that the President might be interested in
the forthcoming book by T. S. Eliot, on THE IDEA OF A CHRISTIAN
SOCIETY, which we are publishing on the fourth of January. I
expect that you know Mr. Eliot's work in other fields of poetry
and criticism; his reputation in those fields adds to the interest
in this particular book, which seems to me, as I have said on
the blurb, a very remarkable and durable work. But I will say
no more than that I hope the President may be interested to
look into it, and that it gives me very great pleasure to send
a copy in that hope.
Yours sincerely,

Honorable Franklin Delano Roosevelt,
President of the United States,
White House,
Washington, D. C.
Dear Mr. President:
New Year's greetings from old Santa Fe and
the State of New Mexico! With these greetings
please accept the attached gift as emphasized
indication of my sincere hope that 1940 will
be good to your health, your fortune and your
happiness.
The gift enclosed typifies Santa Fe. This
city is the center of a growing industry, woolen
fabrics handwoven by native Indians and Spanish-
Americans. A large and growing demand for ties
of this kind has been developed throughout the
United States.
Let me hope that we will meet during 1940, and
that that meeting will take place at Santa Fe.
Cordially yours,

Washington, D.C.
Dear General Watson:
I thank you very much for your kind letter of
recent date.
I am personally seeing to it that one of our
fine White Holland turkeys is being forwarded
to the Housekeeper of the White House, and I
feel confident this bird will delight the
President in case it reaches his table. I
realize, you understand, that there are thousands
of people sending things to the President.
In the past, I have had as high as 50 to 75
cakes sent to me on my birthday, and frankly,
very few of them could be eaten, but this is a
very wonderful bird, properly prepared, and it's
been a pleasure to send it.
Very best wishes for the Holidays.

General Watson
White House
Washington, D.C.
Dear General Watson:
A few weeks ago I sent you the tabulation of the
vote here at Radio Station KMA. I noticed this also
appeared in the Washington Merry-Go-Round.
I have always been a great admirer of the President's
courage and his activities and if it is not too pre-
sumptuous, I would like the pleasure of sending him a
nice 18 to 20 pound White Holland turkey, all thoroughly
dressed and cleaned for Christmas.
I met President Roosevelt in his office. I was in-
troduced by Congressman Wearin and Secretary McIntire.
I met him again at the Drouth Conference in Des Moines,
introduced by Senator Herring. I was on the train from
Creston, Iowa to Red Oak in company with Senator Norris,
Secretary of Agriculture Wallace, Senator Herring, and
Mr. McIntire. The President spoke over our station,
KMA, from Red Oak, Iowa.
It would be a pleasure for me to do this. I am not
doing this in any way for any advertising.
I also have in my office a picture of Mrs. Roosevelt,
Congressman Wearin and his wife, and my family, with
roses which we presented in the early part of the
President's career in the White House, and these roses
were planted on the White House lawn.
In a recent visit of mine to Chicago, stopping at the
1/tmb
Drake Hotel, I noticed you were a guest at their
affiliated hotel, The Gorham, in New York.
Assuring you that if you have any custom in which this
is not the proper thing to do, I will not in the least
feel offended, but I would be pleased to have the privilege
of doing this.
Yours very truly,
Earl E. May

My dear Mr. Maihl:
Your letter of January fifteenth to the
President has been received and I want to assure
you, in his behalf, that your kindness in writing
and submitting your plan is much appreciated.
It was thoughtful of you, too, to send
the President the book and the handmade articles.
It is felt, however, that they should not be ac-
cepted and thus deprive you of an opportunity to
sell them for your own personal benefit. For this
reason I am returning the items and am sure you will
Il
understand that the friendly spirit which prompted
you to send the gifts is, nevertheless, appreciated.
I am sorry that this office knows of no
position to which you could be appointed, but I am
very glad to refer the matter to the Federal Secu-

Bureau of Employment Security.

My dear Mr. MeltSner:
Your letter of November twenty-
fourth to Miss LeHand has been brought to
my attention and I have noted therein your
request for an appointment with the Presi-
dent in order that he may see and possibly
present your picture, which is to be hung
in the National Museum of Brazil, to the
Brazilian Ambassador. I have also noted
your desire to present one of your paintings
of the New England Coast to the Bresident.
I am indeed sorry that it is not
possible to comply with either of your re-
quests. As you can readily appreciate, the
President is unusually busy at this time of
the year with his preparations for the
forthcoming session of the Congress and this,
together with the demands on his time occa-
sioned by the stress of the foreign situation,
has made it necessary for me to restrict his
engagements to those which are both official
and inescapable in nature.
Because of the great pressure on
the President's time, 1t has been the prac-
tice for me to act on his behalf in receiv-
ing all gifts. If it 1s agreeable to you to
make the presentation of your New England
Coast painting through me, I shall be very
glad to ask my secretary to arrange a con-

Dear Miss LeHand:
My paintings are in the collections of many important
museums in the United States and abroad. I am one of the few
American artists represented in the Luxenbourg Museum in Paris.
My self portrait hangs there.
I have recently completed one of my most attractive
portraits posed for by Carmen Miranda, the Brazilian singer, who
has been so well received in this country. As a gesture of good
will, I offered this painting to the Brazilian Ambassador.
In a letter dated November 7th, the Brazilian Ambassador
thanked me for my plan to present one of my paintings to the National
Museum of Brazil at Rio de Janeiro, as a gesture in line with the
good neighbor policy of the U. S. He also stated that he looked for-
ward to the pleasure of meeting me personally.
Since that time Mr. James N. Rosenberg, the well-known
art collector, has taken care of the minor expenses of painting this
picture and I would appreciate his being credited as the donor of
this valuable work.
I was wondering whether the President would be interested
in seeing and presenting this picture to the Brazilian Ambassador as
I think that the gift is a timely one.
Sincerely yours,
Paul Meltoner

Please let me acknowledge and
thank you, in the President's behalf, for
your kindness in sending to him a copy of
your latest publication, "Famous Americans".
He greatly appreciates your thought of him.
I am sorry, however, that a long
established White House policy prevents
the President from commenting, in any way,
on the numerous manuscripts, articles, poems,
etc. which come to him each day. I am sure,
upon further reflection, you will realize
why it is not possible for him to make an
exception and will excuse him from complying
with your request.

It was most thoughtful of you to
send the President the copy of "Look at the

you to know that he appreciates your courtesy.
However, while holding his present
office he, of course, cannot make any coments
, on the merits of the many publications received.
I know that you will understand.

Hon. Franklin D. Roosevelt,
White House,
Washington, D. C.
My dear Mr. President:
It is our privilege to present to you as a person of
prominence, interested in law reform, a pre-publication copy of
LOOK AT THE LAW by Percival E. Jackson, a member of the New York
Bar.
We have published Mr. Jackson's book because we believe
it to be a genuine and unusual contribution to an important social,
economic and political need in that it is a frank and realistic
analysis of the law and of legal problems by a practising lawyer.
We believe this book to be one that, if given wide distribution, may
awaken public interest in the subject of law reform and draw public
support to the efforts of the comparative few who have labored in
this cause.
We trust you will have the opportunity to read this book.
If, in addition, you will let us have your opinion of it, either for
our private purposes or for public circulation, as you yourself may
determine, we would be grateful.
Sincerely yours,
John Macrae Jr.

My dear Miss Meares:
This will acknowledge the receipt
of your letter of February thirteenth to the

send you a disappointing reply, but so many
requests for financial assistance are being

I shall be glad, however, to bring

Mr. Frank J. Wilson,
Chief, United States Secret Service,

Sir:
This report is submitted in compliance with a request
from the White House District dated February 2, 1940.
Accompanied by Agent Klepp, I interviewed Mr. John
Munkacsy, Sr., proprietor, who stated that he shipped six
bottles of his mineral water to the President during the
'March of Dimes' campaign. He sincerely believes this water
will insure the Presid ent's health, saying it has aided
thousands. The water flows from a natural spring and is
poured into sterilized bottles by expensive machinery.
Ticket receipts left by State examiners semi-monthly show
the water to be absolutely pure. From inquiries made, this
spring has never been condemned, and the firm and its product
enjoy a good reputation. Many recently-postmarked letters of
testimonial on file in the office of this firm, some of them
from prominent athletes such as pugilist Joe Louis, etc.,
intimate the water to be beneficial.

Dear Sir;
I am sending you a box of 6 gallons of Munkacsy

from infantile paralysis and claim the water has helped
them a great deal.
Accept this package with our Best Wishes and
hoping this water does prove to be some what of a help
to aid those that do suffer from this dread disease.
Very truly yours,
