The Hon.
Franklin D. Roosevelt,
President of the United States,
Washington, D.C.
August 1, 1941
Honorable Sir:
I am taking the liberty of handing to you
herewith my book "Grafologia - A Escrita e o Caracter"
for the new Hyde Park Library.
On pages 22/26 of this publication you will find
an analysis of your handwriting which, I hope, will
not displease you.
I apologize for having analysed, without your
special permission, your signature set down under
some of the most memorable words ever spoken on
Democracy.
However, as a young writer - whose life was
saved by the Roosevelt Administration after more than
fifteen months spent in Nazi-Germany's prisons and
concentration camps - I could not think of a better,
more personal way of expressing my gratitude to you,
Mr. President, than by inserting this analysis in
the first little book I was able to publish after
doing scientific research work in the New York
Public Library as a free man again..
I am, Honorable Sir,
Very respectfully yours
Helmuter.

the hopes of the future pass endlessly through his mind. Will he

partially disabled man engage in ? Will he always have to depend
on a generous Government to take care of him, or, can he stand on his
own self respecting feet ?
In 1939. I was able to start producing wooden and
plastic novelties. These are sold largely to Gift & Art Shops thru-

My most recent item, a bust of Adolf Hitler in the
garb of the DEVIL should become very popular. It is faithfully ex-
ecuted by the Sculptor, Dean Dwight Deardorff of the Otis Art Insti-

the DEVIL is well portrayed. By studying the bust a bit, and read-
ing the descriptive verse on the back of the base, the story easily
unfolds and depicts what most of us think of the HELLION.
I sincerely trust that you will enjoy adding this
item to your collection. Wishing you well in every way, I am

Dear Mr. Roosevelt,
A first edition copy of my book for your library.
Modern Country Dancing!
Country dancing means our country - America. This is
recreation for all ages and types of people - the most
democratic recreation of a most democratic country.
Modern because it is danced today the way we want to
dance it. We call the dances ourselves the way we want
them not the way they used to be called, we dress for
them the way we want to not the way people used to dress
for them.
Everyone dances the main idea together under a common
leader chosen by the dancers but each is free to dance
the individual steps as he chooses as long as he does not
interfere with or annoy the others, true democracy -
social selfrestraint under chosen leadership.
If this book can give you 15 minutes or 1/2 hour respite
from your over whelming duties it will have been worth
the trouble - but, Square Dance calling is one of the most
satisfying and entertaining hobbies there is. My book
tells you how you may "call" after only an hour or two of
study. Its real relaxation, and remember square dancing
carried our forefathers through many a trying period.
Yours in the greatest success for the world
and its people, we are all behind you,

Dear Mr. President:
As a peace loving American-Jew, I take the liberty of sending
to you the most treasured book, the Prayer Book of the most Sacred Jewish
Holidays.
x76-c
Contrary to the belief of some self appointed public protectors
and some glory seeking Senators, the Jewish people of the United States do
not seek war, as you Mr. President well know, and will notice from the
teachings inscribed in the Jewish High Holiday Prayer Book.
Your attention is especially called to pages 116 and 120 wherein
a prayer is offered to remove crime and warfare; on pages 115 and 319 we
Jews throughout the land pray to God to vouchsafe the President of the United
States and the Governor of the State and all who exercise just and rightful
authority. Notwithstanding, we are accused as war mongers.
This Prayer Book is a personal gift to you, Mr. President, and
you will do your humble servant a great favor in accepting same in the spirit

September 19, 1941.
My dear Mr. President:
I well know what your duties must be at this present crisis,
and that your time must be given only to matters of great importance.
I also know of the grief that is yours in the loss of your dear mother
who was my very good friend. It is with this in mind that I take the
liberty of writing these consoling thoughts of your mother.
I came to know your mother during the New York World's Fair of
1939 and 1940, while I was detailed to the Pan American Union pavilion.
I do not believe there was ever a time that Mrs. Roosevelt visited the
Fair that she did not come to see me or invite me to tea at the Federal
pavilion. We spent many happy days together visiting the other pavilions;
pavilions of nations that were deeply greeved over their homeland and the
present war. In one pavilion we talked with a lady who was writing her
aged mother in England. Here we heard a most pathetic story of how the
war had seperated her family - the husband being in Ecuador and three
small children with the grandmother in England. Your mother with tears
in her eyes, and fatigued from a strenuous day of giving autographs and
standing for pictures to be made, sat down and wrote a few consoling
words to this lady in England. Only last week I learned that this lady,
who was so happy and consoled by the sympathetic expressions of your
mother, was killed in a bomb-raid.
At the close of the Fair we visited the Ecuadorian exhibit and
Mrs. Roosevelt saw a straw hat which she liked very much. I said
"Mrs. Roosevelt, if that hat fits you, I will make you a present".
Whereupon she replied in a most jovial manner, "Mr. Murphy, if you only
knew how long it took to arrange the chapeau I have on - however, I am
willing to take you up on your generous offer". The hat was perfect
and only last May I received a note in the form of an invitation to
visit Hyde Park and see how becoming was the new hat.
In 1939 we had a Pan American Day at the Fair. It was also your
mother's birthday. Many photographs were taken on that day, and I thought
you might like to have the one which I enclose. I also have a very nice
color-movie in sound which was taken on that day, in which your mother
appears several times.
I also want to take this opportunity to say how proud we Americans
are of you, my dear Mr. President, and the wonderful work you are accom-
plishing. That God will guide you in your work is now assured in that
He has called your mother to be with Him in His heavenly home.
May God bless you with continued good health, and guide you in
your strenuous tasks. These are my sincere wishes for you always.
Most respectfully yours,
Gaul Paul W. H.Murshy Murphy
The President,
The White House.
