OUR LADY OF BETHLEHEM

February 8, 1942
Your Excellency
President of the United States
Dear Mr. Roosevelt:
We are sending you this message as a cordial token of mutual,
helpful, good will from the Sisters of Saint Joseph, La Grange,
Illinois, for we fully realize in this time of distress, and impli-
cation in the War, what deep anxiety and mighty responsibility must
be yours, as the leader of these great United States. We have
followed your career of beneficent service to our Country, since you
have been the President. Blessed are they who have learned to look
upon life from the view-point of service to humanity as you have
done.
We have listened to the grace and compelling power of your voice
over the radio and have been pleased to hear your plea for confidence
in God and in Prayer, asking your people to draw closer to God. Your
voice has fired millions of our young men - the flower of our land -
with patriotism, and they have left home and life's dearest interests
to protect Christianity and to fight for a just Peace.
They have gone forth to bring back to Christ a world that is
tired of living un-Christ like. That irreligion has been a failure
in the United States and in the world, is universally acknowledged.
It is only by turning to God as a nation that the United States shall
find favor with the Prince of Peace. The evil forces that are loose
in the world today were made in defiance of God. Always in the
History of the world God has, in His own good time, brought down
those who would defy Him.
We are enclosing a Sacred Heart Badge. It has great efficacy.
We hope you will wear it and place your trust in the Sacred Heart of
Jesus. May He encourage you and strengthen you always. These Badges
are the insignia of the Divine Cammander.
Again we wish to assure you of our loyalty. We are with you
in sympathy, heart, and mind. Our Sisters and the children under our
care - hundreds of them - are praying for your intention. Daily, and
many times a day, we ask God to bless and direct and to guide our
good President; to save our boys, and to send a just Peace to the
United States and to the world.
Yours most faithfully in Christ,
Sisters of Sh. Joseph,
