Dear Sir:
Cleveland and Stevenson on March 4, 1893. The day was very
Enclosed please find a badge I wore at the insuguration of
very cold and stormy. Many of the delegates returned home with nasty, bad
colds and some died. Just think the "tired Old Man", as friend
from Michigan called you, was but ten years old. Also you my will. find
a badge worn by me at the Convention at Rochester at which Convention
we nominated you for Governor and sent you on your way to Washington.
I can remember that Convention as if it were yesterday when we arrived
from Long Beach. The hotel was crowded and I was told that they had
Warm Springs on the 'phone begging you to run for Governor. After
hours of pleading late that night you broke down and consented to run.
You know what happened you were elected and the Happy Warrier was
defeated. Mr. President, have you ever thought what would have happened
if you had declined. The old saying is, "there is a destiney that shapes
our end, rough hew them as we may." Maybe you won't want to keep the badge
because of the Tammany connection, but I am proud of being an old Tarmany
man. My grandfater, after returning from the "ar in 1812, joined the
Society. It has lost much of its power, but I know lots of good honest
men who did and still belong to it. Pometimes I laugh at Mr. Dewey. One
would think everything good, pure, etc., was in the Republican party.
Seems to me that Platt Odell and a few more knew how to play the game.
We have a good vote in down state -- then the good and holy would get
together and count the dead ones up state. Result another Republicen
elected. Do you remember Berd in Caler. He was elected. I remember we
paraded around 125th Street election night in celebration only to wake
up next morning to find out the dead ones were counted again and Caler
was defeated.
Sometimes I run over to "ashington. I have never visited the
White House. After all the excitement is over would you let me know how
I can see the inside of the White House.
Mr. President, I often wonder why you prefer Washington to
that grand old place at Hyde Park,
Take good care of yourself and may the Good Lord watch over and
guide you.
Sincerely yours,

Honorable Franklin D. Roosevelt,
President.
Dear Sir:
Enclosed please find a badge I wore at the inauguration of
Cleveland and Stevenson on March 4, 1893. The day was very nasty,
very cold and stormy. Many of the delegates returned home with bad
colds and some died. Just think the "tired Old Man", as my friend
from Michigan called you, was but ten years old. Also you will find
a badge worn by me at the Convention at Rochester at which Convention
we nominated you for Governor and sent you on your way to Washington.
I can remember that Convention as if it were yesterday when we arrived
from Long Beach. The hotel was crowded and I was told that they had
Warm Springs on the 'phone begging you to run for Governor. After
hours of pleading late that night you broke down and consented to run.
You know what happend - -- you were elected and the Happy Warrior was
defeated. Mr. President, have you ever thought what would have happened
if you had declined. The old saying is, "there is a destiny that shapes
our end, rough hew them as we may." Maybe you won't want to keep the badge
because of the Tammany connection, but I am proud of being an old Tammany
man. My grandfater, after returning from the War in 1812, joined the
Society. It has lost much of its power, but I know lots of good honest
men who did and still belong to it. Sometimes I laugh at Mr. Dewey. One
would think everything good, pure, etc., was in the Republican party.
Seems to me that Platt Odell and a few more knew how to play the game.
We have a good vote in down state then the good and holy would get
together and count the dead ones up state. Result another Republican
elected. Do you remember Berd S. Caler. He was elected. I remember we
paraded around 125th Street election night in celebration only to wake
up next morning to find out the dead ones were counted again and Caler
was defeated.
Sometimes I run over to Washington. I have never visited the
White House. After all the excitement is over would you let me know how

MEMORANDUM FOR MR. RILEY
3/24/45
Mr. Hassett wrote that Joseph L. T. Fiorino, Long Island City, N. Y.,
has been writing about the valuable hunting horn (misic horn) which he has
carved for the President and is too valuable to place in the mails. He asks
that a friend of the President call for the horn. Mr. Hassett asks that
one of the local operators might carry out this mission and thus put an
end to the correspondence.

Dear Mr. McLean:
q-m
Thank you so much for your very
nice letter of March third. of course, I
remember you very well. I remember the
very nice visit I had with you in Pa Watson's
office.
We were all shocked and distressed
at the sad news of Pa's death. He was a
grand person and we shall all miss him very
much, particularly the President.
You are more than kind to want to
send to the President shipments of fish from

time to time. As you know, the President is
particularly fond of lobster and I know he
will be delighted to have some of the Canada

variety which 1s especially delicious. Will
you be good enough to address the package as

Pa gave me some of those delicious
smelts which you sent to him shortly before
he left on the trip to the Crimea. He said
"they were the finest smelts he ever had eaten"
and I agreed with him.
The President had a very interesting

Washington in fine spirits. He asks me to send
you his grateful thanks and best wishes, to
which I add mine.

Miss Grace Tulley,
The White House,
WASHINGTON, D.C.
Dear Miss Tulley:-
You probably remember meeting me in Washington with General Watson
on one or two occasions. We received the news of the death of the General
with great sorrow. He was a great friend of mine over a period of years,
and I always visited he and Mrs. Watson when I went to Washington.
My home, as you probably know, is on the southern shore of New
Brunswick near Campobello, and I have known the President, as a friend,
quite a long time.
The last year or two I have been in Ottawa as a dollar a year man
but expect to be through here before very long. We have large quantities of
fish in New Brunswick caught in the area around Campobello where I am inter-
ested in a large fish plant. I have been sending certain fish, when they
were in season, to the White House for a number of years. First, I used to
send them to Colonel McIntyre, whom I had met at Campobello and knew very
well. Later I sent them to General Watson. What I would like to know now
is, would it be alright for me to send them in your name, and you could pass
them around as General Watson did. The lobster season is on now, and I would
like to send some fresh lobster, if agreeable.
We were all so glad to read in the Press that the President came
back from Yalta in robust health. His unprecedentedservice to mankind will
not be forgotten in a thousand years, and we think as highly of Mr. Roosevelt
in Canada as the people of the United States, and we do hope that he will be
granted the best of health to finish the greatest job that was ever given to
any statesman.
With kind personal regards to the President and yourself, I am,
Yours very truly,

I want to thank you sincerely for your kind letter

As lobsters are in season at the present time, I have
given instructions for a shipment to go forward early this week,
so they should arrive any day now, and you can pass the word on
to Mr. Morgan Geiss to be on the lookout for same. I might say
these lobsters come from near Campobello and they should be very
good ones, so I trust you will all enjoy them.

My dear Mr. McLean:
Those wonderful lobsters arrived in
perfect condition, and I turned over half of them
to the President and Mrs. Roosevelt. They had
them for lunch the other day and enjoyed them im-
mensely. My family and I had a lobster feast, so
you can see how many people you made happy. This
takes to you the President's, Mrs. Roosevelt's and
my grateful thanks for your thought of us.
Pa's death has left us all very sad. He
