May I assure ppt you that your kindness in wishing to present your scrap- + books to the President is deeply appreciated. GS I am sorry that we cannot arrange for you to come in and see the President and make the presentation personally as you request. I know I do not have to ex- qB plain to you, however, how exceedingly busy the President is during these critical war days and how difficult he is finding it to make engagements of a personal nature. As & matter of fact, he is seeing only those officials of the Government working directly on the defense pro- gram, and has had to delegate to the members of his secretariat the duty of receiving all gifts on his behalf. thousand I doubt whether you wish to come to Washing- ton under these circumstances, and suggest that if you wish to mail your books to the President, you address them in my care. I regret exceedingly that it will not be pos- sible for the President to commend the war in- dustry books, the publication of which you are considering. Because of the great number of very PP7-9-B meritorious undertakings that are brought to his attention, it is necessary for the President to withhold comment or commendation of any kind. McIntyre The White House Washington, D. C. My dear Marvin McIntyre: I think the President's personal inspection of American War Industry, and the subsequent full and open press release relative to it combined, makes a historical master-stroke that will be heard instantaineously around the world. But we all can rest assured that the President will always do the right thing at the right time. However, the object of this letter is to see if you can obtain Presidental help, as Commander in Chief, of a paralleling and, I believe, important project which we here at Polygraphic are endeavoring to put through with the cooperation of several outstanding war plants in the various war industries. x4675- x4675-miscel. In close cooperation with such war plants, and of course within the strict bounds of Censorship Regulations, which are thoroughly established with the management of each plant, we want to publish a series of fine books, based upon fresh researched data, for distribution through the regular channels of the popular book trade. This particular method of distributing industry story-books, by top Authors and Illustrators, was successfully developed by our Mr. James Werblow in cooperation with NBC officials And as part of my urgent request and as an x136-minal example, I am sending you under separate cover a copy of "Magic Dials", which is one of such books with a wide public distribution record. Now this tried and tested plan and opportunity is available to the cause of America's war industry. It seems obvious to me that such books should be made available at the lowest possible price not only to the public of the United States but, if it were possible, they should be flown and dropped in the streets of Berlin, Rome and Tokyo. The President has now personally blazed the trail of the theme for this pro- posed series of American war industry books, and his appearance in war pro- duction photographs, now available in such abundance, creates some of the Notice: Due to the prevailing conditions, all paper and board prices are subject to acceptance on the date of quotation. Our prices are submitted accordingly. VERMONT GRAVURE AND LITHOGRAPHIC CORPORATION A DIVISION OF POLYGRAPHIC COMPANY OF AMERICA POLYGRAPHIC COMPANY OF AMERICA - 2 - impressive illustrations for each book. Also, his tour will create a public desire for more and still more information, and such a series of carefully prepared books, within the censorship regulations, forms a natural sequence to the press story of his historical tour of inspection. The management groups we have contacted during the past four months hesitate to give their word of acceptance to the necessary cooperation on their part. They seem to feel they might be held in the eyes of Washington as seeking publicity of their war efforts, even though they want to and know that every word and illustration would be censored by public officials. Just a word of approval in a letter from the President, expressing his own personal opinion about these proposed war industry books, would be the in- centive that would start this important work immediately, and thereby make it possible for the public to obtain such books early in 1943. I hope it might be possible for you to obtain some help for me in this matter. Sincerely yours, C. Ray Cooper CRC:RB C. October 29, 1942. enrath The President, The White House, Washington, D. C. after leap Dear Mr. President: I am past 70 years of age and a great grandmother. I have seen much sorrow in my day and have experienced many bitter dis- appointments during my lifetime. However, the greatest grief that could come to me is the suffering imposed by the ruthless aggressors on the land of my forefathers. I speak, of course, particularly of Poland. It is very comforting that this nation has at its head a man who unselfishly pours out his heart to the stricken people of the battered lands and gives them the assurance of brighter days to come as you have done on numerous occasions. It is in grateful recognition of this that I humbly request you to accept a token of appreciation, ich I am sending you under separate cover, on behalf of all Americans of Polish descent. It has been my hobby to attempt to preserve for all pos- terity the costumes of the land which my forefathers loved so much. This has been possible by dressing dolls in the colorful costumes of the many provinces of Poland. To date I have dressed more than 80 of these dolls, many of which have been raffled for the benefit of the soldiers in this war. A set of 16 dolls has been presented to the museum in this city as well as to the museum belonging to the Polish Women's Alliance of Chicago. I feel that it is only fair that you, Mr. President, should have a pair of these dolls in the White House as a reminder that all Americans of Polish descent are grateful to you for the hope and encouragement you have offered many times in behalf of Poland. The dolls I am sending you represent a dancing pair, dressed in the gay festival costumes worn in happier days in the city of After the dolls arrive, should you feel that they would be of sufficient interest to the people of Washington, I am ready and willing to also present a pair of dolls to the Smithsonian Institute.
