Dear Miss McAvoy:
Chief of Staff John Sununu asked me to respond to your recent letter
regarding his background and current responsibilities at the White
House.
The primary responsibility of the Chief of Staff is to manage the
President's agenda and the day-to-day operation of the White House.
He oversees the development of domestic and foreign policy, communi-
cations, staff, budget, and relations with the press, the Congress,
and State and local governments. He accompanies the President to
most meetings and events worldwide and is often called upon to speak
on the President's behalf.
John Henry Sununu was born in 1939 and spent most of his childhood
in New York City attending parochial elementary school and, later,
the La Salle Military Academy in Oakdale, Long Island. He went on
to study engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
and earned his Ph.D. in 1966. While he proceeded to distinguish
himself as an educator, engineer, small businessman, and community
leader, he is most often remembered for his work as Governor of the
State of New Hampshire. He was elected in 1983 and served for three
terms until 1989, when he was asked by President Bush to serve as
his Chief of Staff at the White House.
He and his wife, Nancy, have eight children. In his spare time he
enjoys skiing, golfing, reading, and collecting baseball cards.
Governor Sununu is proud to be serving as Chief of Staff and feels
that his diverse experience as an engineer and as a leader in both
State government and private industry could be of special benefit
to President Bush's Administration and to our nation as well.
I hope this information is helpful, and it comes to you with
Governor Sununu's best wishes.
Sincerely,
Katie, Winkeljohn

Dear Mr. Medley:
Thank you for your recent message regarding the firearms issue.
As you are aware, President Bush and the American people
are gravely concerned about the availability of foreign-made
weapons used by criminals to commit devastatingly violent acts
throughout our communities. This is an intolerable situation
and will not be allowed to continue.
On May 15, the President announced a comprehensive and
commonsense program to effectively combat crime, with strong
proposals to limit the access to illicit weapons. At the
same time, the program will not infringe upon the rights of
law-abiding citizens to own and use firearms. In light of
your interest, I am enclosing for you a fact sheet which
outlines the President's initiative in this area.

On behalf of the Chief of Staff, thank you for your
postcard concerning appropriations legislation for the
District of Columbia, which permits the use of funds
to pay for abortions.
The House of Representatives and the Senate have passed
the District of Columbia appropriations bill for Fiscal
Year 1990, which permits Federal funding for abortions

Dear Mrs. Matthies:
On behalf of the Chief of Staff, thank you for your
letter concerning appropriations legislation for the
District of Columbia, which permits the use of funds
to pay for abortions.
The House of Representatives has passed and sent to
the Senate the District of Columbia appropriations
bill for Fiscal Year 1990, which permits Federal funding
for abortions under circumstances where the life of the
mother is not endangered. President Bush has announced
his intention to veto the appropriation bill if it is
presented to him in its current form.
The President does not believe that appropriated funds
should be used to pay for abortions other than in those
cases where the life of the mother would be endangered
if the fetus were carried to term.
Again, thank you for writing.

Attention: Mr. John Sununu
Dear Mr. Sununu:
I read with dismay that Judge Paul Pressler of
Houston, Texas, is a possible nominee to a
federal ethics post. Indeed, I understand he is
to be named director of the U.S. Office of
Government Ethics.
Mr. Pressler is well known as the architect of
the threatened shattering of the Southern Raptist
Fellowship or Convention. I am not a member of
that body, but I am a retired minister who has
followed the widening conflict in that body with
great sadness. Mr. Pressler has shown himself
to be rigid, and intolerent to the point of being
bigoted. He has been a disastrous leader within
the Southern Baptist Convention, end I can think of
no reasons to expect that he would be otherwise in
his position as director of the Ethics Office.
I vie his nomination as a disasterous one for the
Bush Administration.
Sincerely,
ERNEST

I have been informed that President Bush intends to nominate
Judge Paul Pressler of Houston, Texas to the United States
Office of Government Ethics. I would like to state that I
have known Judge Pressler for many years and have found him
to be an exceedingly intelligent and patriotic individual.
He has conducted himself as a fine, Christian gentleman at
all times to my knowledge. I can think of no one better who
President Bush could appoint to the position of Ethics and
I pray that this does take place, and that Judge Pressler
will be able to do something about the poor ethics record:
of our governmental employees and elected officials.

Dear Governor Sununu:
I was excited to see in yesterday's Houston Chronicle that
Judge Paul Pressler has been nominated as Director of the
Office of Government Ethics. I fully support this
nomination and firmly believe Judge Pressler to be an
excellent choice.
It really disturbed me to read of personal attacks made by
members of the liberal faction of the Southern Baptist
denomination. Judge Pressler has been a vocal supporter of
the resurgence of the majority conservative factor of the
Southern Baptists. For that, he is a target of the left-
wing liberals. Please keep that in mind when you receive
such negative comments from those people. Their whole
scheme reeks of the attacks made on Judge Bork!
I have known Judge Pressler for five years and I believe
him to be of the highest integrity. His appointment would
go hand in hand with President Bush's commitment to strong
ethics in our government.
Sincerely,
Whiles Male J. Marks,

Dear Mr. Myers:
I'm sorry for the delay in responding to your letter regarding
the firearms issue.
Thank you for taking the time to write.
