Dear Ms. Jukes:
Thank you for your recent letter inviting the Chief of Staff and
Mrs. Sununu to serve as Honorary Chairmen for your 1991 Cultural
Leader of the Year Dinher honoring Michel T. and Billye Halbouty
on March 18.
Unfortunately, the Governor and Mrs. Sununu are unable to
participate in your event. Due to the sheer volume of requests
of this type which the Governor receives, he has adopted a policy
of not lending his name or assisting in the promotion of events
he is unable to attend. The Governor and Mrs. Sununu hope you
understand that this is no way a reflection of the worthiness of
your event and they certainly appreciate your kindness in
thinking of them.
With best wishes.

Dear Students:
Chief of Staff John Sununu asked me to respond to your recent
letter regarding his background and current responsibilities at
the White House.
The primary responsibility of the Chief of Staff is to manage
the President's agenda and the day-to-day operation of the
White House. He oversees the development of domestic and foreign
policy, communications, staff, budget, and relations with the press,
the Congress, and State and local governments. He accompanies the
President to most meetings and events worldwide and is often called
upon to speak on the President's behalf.
John Henry Sununu was born in 1939 and spent most of his childhood
in New York City attending parochial elementary school and, later,
the La Salle Military Academy in Oakdale, Long Island. He went on
to study engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
and earned his Ph.D. in 1966. While he proceeded to distinguish
himself as an educator, engineer, small businessman, and community
leader, he is most often remembered for his work as Governor of the
State of New Hampshire. He was elected in 1983 and served for three
terms until 1989, when he was asked by President Bush to serve as
his Chief of Staff at the White House.
He and his wife, Nancy, have eight children. In his spare time
he enjoys skiing, golfing, reading, and collecting baseball cards.
Governor Sununu is proud to be serving as Chief of Staff and feels
that his diverse experience as an engineer and as a leader in both
State government and private industry could be of special benefit
to President Bush's Administration and to our nation as well.
I hope this information is helpful, and it comes to you with
Governor Sununu's best wishes.

Dear Mr. Jacobs:
Thank you for your recent message regarding the firearms issue.
As you are aware, President Bush and the American people are
gravely concerned about the availability of foreign-made weapons
used by criminals to commit devastatingly violent acts throughout
our communities. This is an intolerable situation and will not be
allowed to continue.
On May 15, the President announced a comprehensive and commonsense
program to effectively combat crime, with strong proposals to limit
the access to illicit weapons. At the same time, the program will
not infringe upon the rights of law-abiding citizens to own and use
firearms. In light of your interest, I am enclosing for you a fact
sheet which outlines the President's initiative in this area.
Thank you for taking the time to write.
Sincerely,
John H. Sununu

Dear Mr. Jopling:
Thank you for your letter forwarded through the courtesy of The
Right Honorable Shirley Williams, inviting the Chief of Staff to
address a meeting in the Houses of Parliament.
Your invitation is appreciated, but the heavy demands of Governor
Sununu's schedule make it impossible for him to accept. However,
your kind offer will be kept in mind if there is an opportunity
to be in London at some future time.
With the Governor's best wishes,
Sincerely,
