Dearest Mum,

Your long newsy letter of Saturday was most welcome
P.S. Enclosed is adm. Kauffman's last letter which for
to us this morning. Beth and I read it together at breakfast and
Dad only to read return also a show letter from
have spent some time takking it over togehter and making plans.
Both of us are thoroughly aware of the fact that life
for us during the first year or so of our marriage is going to con-
sist of very little of the luxuries and pleasures to which we have
been accustomed to having for SO long. However, we are eagerly looking
forward to tackling whatever the future may have to give us.We will
approach everything with our eyes open -even as we are planning
our marriage. We do not harbor any grandiose, romantic illusions as
to making lots of money soon or of living in style, for both of us
have seen enough of life to realize thoroughly that, with prices
and conditions what they are now, there will b little for us besides
each other for some time to come. Neverthless, Mum, we both are thril-
led with the idea of making something out of very little and are ter-
ribly keen to get under way.
Beth I know is going to be one of the most capable wives
sthat has ever lived. I can already see that there is nothing that will
Dever be to much for her to handle. She is going to take cooking lessons
before we are married SO that she will not have to learn later and tak
take the chance of wasting things. She is SO IN conscientious that
she never fails to attain perfection in everything she essays. You can
yourson enough to realize high exaggeration ! fire, Bith
see that well I am getting this is the most wonderful wife in all the world. I guess you know
Iff Beth is able to take the course that she wants in cod
Scooking on Tuesday nights, then I am going to take a course on the
same night at the same place in home mechanics. These courses will be
of great value to us and should save us a lot of money in the long run.
CReally and truly, Mum, we know that our existence will be meager for
some time to bome, but we also know that there is nothing else in the
world that we want than to be with each other all the time. We are
<definitely aware of the obstacles before us;we are certain we can overem
*come them
You and Dad are unquestionably the mest generous two
people who have ever lived and definitely the two most loved and app-
reciated by their children. However, I want you to know now that Beth
and I want to do everything for ourselves, that we fully realize the
Sthemendous obligations you have to each other and to the rest of the
ofamily, and that we shall never ask for help from any but ourselves. We
are choosing our own course with our eyesswide open. We shall make a
success of it on our own without being a liabiliity to any of those
dear to us.
Your very exciting news about the flat silverix just the
most wonderful thing we have ever heard, and both Beth and I hasten to
accept at once. We certainly would love to have you give us our flat
silver. Wow, what a present! Mum, you are just too adorable for words.

How sweet of you to have gone to so much trouble about the monograms
and everything!And do we appreciate it!The complteteness of the set
you have chosen is just too unbelieveable for words because we lit-
erally could find very little here. We certainly would love to hav e our
flat silver from you. Then you'd be with us forever at every mouthful
just as you are always in our hearts.
Tanta's check sounds simply divine. Beth and I agree with you
loo% about the tea set and will wait on that We definitely would like to
save both Tanta's and Gampy's checks for things we shall need after wex
are married and see what we still require after the other presents are
in-if there are any other presents. maybe we're not excited!
Admiral Kauffman's last letterrthe other day was really a
gem. He now seems to feel that he will be able to get back about the
middle of December -or rather that he will be back early in December XXX
and that the wedding could be in the middle of the month. That would be k
heavenly for US. Incidentally, his views on my chance of getting the P.R.
job in Sao Paulo were 100 % identical with Dad' Likewise did he express
the exact same sentiments concerning the importance of the Traffic
end of the airline business. I am so certain that he and Dad are going to
be the very greatest of friends. Admiral Kauffman is a man of very great
business ability and sound judgment. The two of them cannot fail to click.
Any more news as yet from Poppy as to when he expects to be
home?Do keep us posted. Also, Mum, are you still planning to give me a
trousseau of shirts, SO cks, pyjammas, underwear, handkerchiefs, ties and a
bathrobe, or should I plan to get these articles myself.
I an in a quandary as to what to wear to the wedding. Are
cutaways still in fashion, or are they out?Elsa seems to think that they XE
are out for the duration. If not a cutaway, I guess it will have to be
white, although where I am going to get a white suit made here is beyond
me. They cannot be bought. We will discuss the matter a little more and then
let you know. In the meantime dropus a line answering these questions, if
you get a chance.
I shall certainly answer those letters. We have been SO rushed
that I have just never had a chance yet.
Played tennis with Barbara and Tom Thatcher yesterday and had
a grand time. They were off SO Beth and I won easily, but it was nice. The
week end has been too wonderful for words with Beth more adorable add
dearer every second. It seems that evry minute of kex our life makes us so
mush closer to each other. I love her more than anything in the world.
Must stop now as we are about to bycicle off to tennis. My
desrest love to you, dad, and all at home,

limited- as you have no doubt
read in the papers we have feen

experience- Pops has destinguished
himself many times and is in good
shape. I understand he had an
emergency landing in the water, was in
picked up by a distroyer, and is
good condition as are his redinnan

Dearest Dottie:
Please excuse the informal paper but am jotting
you a line from air plot and facilities are limited. As you
have no doubt read in the papers we have been active and it
has been quite an experience. Pops has distinguished himself
many times and is in good shape. I understand he had an
emergency landing in the water, was picked up by a destroyer,
and is in good condition as are his radioman and gunner.
Haven't seen him personally but gathered this dope from some
pilots in his squadron. I imagine he is back on board his
carrier by now. You will probably hear from him in the not
too distant future, but don't worry as this is a big ocean,
and communications are difficult. I am keeping close tab,
and in my opinion he will be wearing an air medal soon. Wish
I could go into more detail but censorship regulations forbid.
A great many of our own torpedo pilots know Pops well and
have come all the way up to air plot to look me up, and tell
me what a. great fellow he is. Dottie you should be SO proud
of him, one of the finest characters I know, and a darn good
pilot and naval officer to boot.
Well I must close and will write again soon.
