LIMITED OFFICIAL USE
March 6, 1975
Honorable Philip C. Habib
Assistant Secretary for East Asian Affairs
Department of State
Washington, D. C.
Dear Phil:
In an effort to keep you, Bill Gleysteen and Oscar Armstrong
a little better informed I am going to try to pouch in a
report each month setting out contacts I have made with
diplomats and PRC officials. Perhaps it will give you a
little better feel for my official life here.
I am trying now to invite the various PRC officials that
I called on when I first arrived back to USLO. In addition
we have requested several other protocol visits on Chinese
officials.
The diplomatic receptions though deadly do extend our con-
tacts with the Chinese and with the diplomatic corps. The
contacts with the highest ranking Chinese guests are fleeting
since these normally are held in the wings at the beginning
of the reception; the band then plays, the bigger shots plus
the host Ambassador march in, seat themselves in overstuffed
chairs at one end of the room and converse for what's left
of the hour these receptions take. When the hour is up they
promptly march out and disappear. There are a few exceptions
to this procedure and one does get a chance to visit with
those PRC officials that don't make the overstuffed-chair
line-up.
NOTE: The officials on both sides get frightfully bored
as the hour wears on. On occasion some appear to doze off.
The seated wives really look out of it. There's got to be
a better way
Don't kill yourself with all that travel and anxiety.
Best regards.
Yours very truly,
George Bush

Peking
Dear Mr. Chi:
On Tuesday, May 27th from 5:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. we
are having an open house reception at my residence.
During that time we will be showing pictures of the recent
tennis match in the United States between Jimmy Connors and
John Newcombe.
I hope that you, Mr. Lo and Mr. Fei along with the tennis
players at the International Club will be able to come.
I know you will enjoy the caliber of the tennis being played.
The reception is very informal. We will serve refreshments.
People will be dropping in for some or all of the tennis. It
is understood that some people will arrive late and some in
turn will have to leave early.
I do hope some or all of you who have been so kind to me at
the International Club will be able to come. I particularly
hope that Messrs. Wong, De, Ho and the others can come. If
only some of them can come I will arrange to show the tapes
to the others at an agreed upon time.
Sincerely,
George Bush
